Hi,

I think gbpvr is great, but there's one thing that's a bit annoying. I've made my computer with one very quiet 2.5inch disk that has XP and some small files on it, a Sumsung disk that contains the livetv and recordings and then a second Seagate disk that contains some older recordings that I wanted to keep, but couldn't since the Samsung was getting full.

I've set my computer to spin down the disks after 3 minutes. The super-quiet XP disk never really spins down due to XP accessing it all the time. The two other ones spin down when I'm not accessing them directly.

Every 15 minutes, something (I think the recording service) looks through my two slightly noisier disks... spinning them up.

I know this is a detail, as these disks are also pretty quiet, but it's getting a bit annoying. Would it be possible to have a setting that turns off or at least changes the period of the recording service's look-around on the disks?

Best regards, and thanks for the great software!

It's not the recording service, I'm pretty sure. I use a 2nd disk for recording, and it's set to sleep after 5min. If it were being hit for something, it would wake it up and I would know it.

You probably have the indexing service or some autorun feature like defrag or anti-virus performing a task. Check the logs in xp (right-click my computer, manage), and it may have evidence. If it is hard to find, write down the time when it happend to help look for it.

Hi,

I'm pretty sure. I'm using Filemon from Sysinternals.com (a free tool) and it says it's GBPVRRecordingService. Sometimes it's GBPVR.exe. If it doesn't happen to you, there may be something weird with my setup, of course. There are some explorer events also, but I don't think this is the culprit, as they're going every minute and probably just hit the cache.

Would the logs you mention be under 'Events'? I've never seen this Manage before... Nice.

They may be there, to. Manage is just a CP of many of the XP resouces.

Are you using Archieve to put them there? Do you have plugins that would need to interact w/ them? If you turn off all your pluigins but TV, does it still happen? Does it happen if you turn off GB and recording service altogther? (you'll need to use the stop bat file in gb folder to stop service)

Do you use any panels or plug-ins? Some of these access the GBPVR pending recordings list on a periodic basis. I do not know if GBOVR caches this list or if it access the disk to build it.

The newer seagates seem good so far. They've had problems in the past w/ IDE drives. The two I have are dead silent, except for the one that needs to spin up from sleep (which is just a quiet, forgivable whine).

I like my IBMs (different machine), except one likes to do a thermal recalibration once a day (kind of like a bloop noise..just on the 80Gb). It's been a trooper for more than 5yrs now as primary on my main system.

I've also been happy w/ WD over the years. I have some Maxtors, but money was tight when I got them Wink

I'll try your plugin suggestions. Thanks.

Hi,

I tried the plugin thing, but none of that helped. I guess there's no quick workaround :-(

I've now excluded the noisy harddisk from the list of disks in the GBPVR Config Panel for Video Library, and it doesn't spin up any more. This means I can't view the movies from GBPVR, but it solves the problem. I guess maybe I can use another recording plugin. There seem to be several...

They all just use the same GB-PVR recording functions behind the scenes.
