smart TV access to server

I have nextPVR running on an Ubuntu 18 (Bionic) headless Mac Mini server using a WinTV-dualHD tuner. I successfully remotely setup all available DVB=T channels and EPG using Chrome running on a Mac running on the home network. I can watch TV and schedule recordings on the Mac. The server is also accessible from my iPhone using the NextTV app. 

However although the LG smart TV I wish to watch TV from can access the NextPVR web page with its TVOS browser but none of the tuned channels are evident and the devices page cannot be selected on the setup tab. What am I missing?

At this stage you'd need an android device or apple tv connected.

I have an LG C9 myself, and I have been experimenting with creating an LG client app for NextPVR. It's working pretty well. The only potential issue is LG has a notoriously difficult/slow process to get applications accepted for it's content store.

I would like to know if is possible to connect the same LG smart TV to the immediately adjacent headless server via HDMI cable rather than by network connection, it may be unnecessary  but I wish to enjoy the highest possible resolution

Yes, if it's got an HDMI connector, then there is no reason you couldn't connect this to your TV and view that way.

If your server is headless then you may not have good media support.  It will depend if you can get Kodi running on an old mac mini.  I am assuming old because you run Ubuntu.

Some people can get LibreElec running on some Mac minis.  I'd try building a boot usb of v10 generic x64 and seeing if media plays.
