I've been swapping back and forth between two system drives over the past week or more by opening chassis and swapping IDE cable. It occurs to me it would be handy to have a front-loading 'caddy' style system. Can anyone recommend anything reliable, quick to change, reasonable price etc.

Cheers,
Brian

I've never tried it, but I see those external HD enclosures that allow you to use your own HDs like they were external HD units. They're pretty cheap (< $100 I've seen), and if you have a lot of extra old HDs (like I do, although the majority are old and < 10Gb), it would be a very cost-effective alternative.

I have no idea if they suck or not.

I've got some cheapo ones like that GBP7 each. They fit in a slot, on the ide cable, and the drive is in a caddy that slots into the bay. Work Great. VIPER is the name I think (I don't recall exactly since thrown away the boxes).

geeks.com usually has one flavor of these or another ...

here's the current one
http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=GN210&cat=CAS
at less than $8.00 US

You can also find them at newegg.com.

I've used a few enclosures of this type (if not this exact package name) and they've worked fine. I've even used them in USB 2.0/Firewire external enclosures with good success.
