Couldn't find a post on this... so quick question...

If using timeshiftingwhen watching a station, and then half way through the program, I decide I want to record the whole episode. Does the recording service grab as much of the show from the timeshifting buffer and prepend it to the recording?

When you're timeshifting, and you press the "record" button, it just tells GB-PVR not to delete this temporary live tv file, and instead add a recordings entry for it. It doesnt need to pre-pend anything since it was already recording.

How far back, time wise, does the temporary file go?

As long as you've been watching it.

So what happens when you run out of hard disc space if live tv has been enabled from dawn to dusk......and where is the temporary file located?

The recordings are only as long as the show you're watching. After you've finished watching each show, the temporary mpeg file for that show is deleted. So in effect, when you watch live tv, you're actually watching many files in succession.

If you dont have enough disc space for the show you're currently watching, then it'll probably just crash or some other unexpected result.
