Optimizing TV tuner hardware and recording schedules for reliability

I’ve been spending a lot of time fine-tuning my NextPVR setup lately, trying to get to a point where I can just "set it and forget it" for my daily recordings. While the software is incredibly powerful, I'm finding that the reliability of my library is really dependent on the hardware handshake between the tuner and the host machine.
The balance of stability and automation
Managing a growing library of recordings while keeping the system stable enough to handle back-to-back shows is a constant process of optimization.
  • Tuner selection: Are you guys finding more success with network-attached tuners (like HDHomeRun) or are the traditional PCIe cards still the gold standard for latency and signal quality? I’ve noticed a slight difference in how quickly the stream stabilizes depending on the source.
  • Storage management: With the file sizes of HD broadcasts, I’ve been wrestling with disk fragmentation. Are you moving your recordings to a separate NAS with its own RAID array, or are you keeping the storage local to the PVR host for faster indexing?
  • Post-processing: I’ve experimented with automated commercial skipping and transcoding scripts. Does anyone else find that running these immediately after a recording finishes causes issues with concurrent tasks?
Keeping the EPG data clean
The reliability of my recording schedules seems to live or die by the quality of the EPG data. I’m curious if anyone has moved away from standard OTA/cable guide data toward third-party providers (like Schedules Direct) to avoid those annoying "no data" gaps that cause missed recordings.
Weather and the "indoor" PVR project
This deep dive into my media server setup is happening right as the weather has become the perfect excuse to stay inside. The forecast is calling for a long stretch of persistent heavy rain and a significant drop in temperatures, which has basically turned my home office into my personal command center.
Honestly, the stormy weather is actually perfect for this kind of "technical" work. When it’s pouring rain outside and the sky is a constant gray, there’s no pressure to be active outdoors, which makes it much easier to commit to hours of log checking, server maintenance, and tweaking recording profiles. There’s something strangely satisfying about getting your media server perfectly dialed in while a storm passes outside. It’s the ultimate "indoor" project for a gloomy week—my server uptime is going to look great by the time the sun finally comes back out.
Seeking your advice
How are you all handling your server maintenance lately? If you’ve found a "magic" combination of tuner hardware and software settings that guarantees a perfect recording every time, I’d love to hear your approach.
Are you sticking to a purely local setup, or have you virtualized your PVR environment? Any insights on keeping the signal quality consistent during bad weather would be much appreciated—I’ve noticed mine gets a bit twitchy when the storms roll in, ironically enough!
