34 button remote problems

Hi, I lurked on this forum for a while, and finally decided to take the plunge and get an MVP. The MVP works great, but I am having trouble setting up the remote. I have the old 34-button remote, and I can't use the number buttons to change the channel. Also the mute button doesn't work. Any advice for this noob would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Did you press 'OK' after typing the numbers?

The mute button doesnt work. I dont tend to use mute, so I just havn't got to it yet.
