Anyone using subtitle files well?

I get movies once in a while that come w/ the subtitles. I want to use them when the subs aren't embedded (someone speaks spanish during a english lang film), but I can't seem to tell it to only show the non-english ones (even though I have set vobsub/ffdshow to english).

Anyone good w/ these, or know if there's a trick? Right now it just means I need to move them out of a subfolder when I do need them.

Do you mean that out of a single file you'd want it to display only specific parts? or that you'd want to selectively activate the file per movie?

Let's say I'm watching an English lang film w/ foriegn lang in it...say, Radiers of the Lost Ark (german subtitles). Sometimes the subs aren't embedded, and just put in the english sub file (so only the german lang parts appear).

What happens often is if you let vobsub handle the sub files it finds, it can't seem to (or often/always) detect they are the english translations for an english lang film, or only show the english translations of non-english portions.

This is a *.sub file, so I can't read it plain text to see how it flags things (like the SST or SSA or whatever files)

I'm not sure if the .sub file has several languages in there... The SRT files I have have only 1 language, so they're either always on or always off... There is no link between the actual movie and the SRT/SUB file that I know of, so I don't see how DirectVobSub could detect when the in video language changes...

All I could think of would be to have a SRT file with just the subtitles for when you want them. Directvobsub allows to convert files, I think, so you could always convert them to SRT and edit them manually to include only the subtitles you'd want...

Ah...got it. Maybe I've had two sets of experiece w/ different types of sub files and not known it. I'm going to assume if there is an English lang one in there, it was meant for Intl' viewers, and not to support foriegn portions of a English lang film.
