Need help with HIP, MCE2005 IR, & GBPVR

A while back there were a couple threads here about using the MCE2005 IR blaster with GB-PVR to control a STB. Someone mentioned the freebie package 'HIP' as an alternative to Girder. It has a utility, HIPSend, that was written to be used with GB-PVR.

OK...what I'm trying to do is use it all to change channels on my HDTV tuner that I feed into GB-PVR. I have the MCE2005 remote & IR blaster and I've downloaded & installed HIP and HIPSend and played with it a bit and read the stuff on the DVB forum but I have to say I'm still baffled about how it all fits together.

Has anyone here gotten this combo to work with a STB? I would really appreciate a step-by-step recipe on how to do it.

I've been able to get into HIP and teach it the tuner's remote commands and they even work when I run the test. I just don't see how to make the connection with HIPSend and HIP. I've pointed my capture source channel changer to hipsend but it doesn't seem to do anything. I'm sure I'm missing something obvious but it's getting to be really frustrating.

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

OTOH, I think (hope) sub is going to fix the problem with using the MCE2005 blaster directly from GB-PVR in the next release, so perhaps I should just wait for that. But that wouldn't be as much fun, now, would it?

Once you have the STB commands in HIP, you then have to teach hip the commands that HIPSend gennerates.

1) go to hip and set it up to learn a new remote code, (via the system-wide keys screen NOT the add/edit IR commands screen) then while its sat waiting, open a command prompt window, navigate to where hipsend.exe is, and type "hipsend 1" into the command prompt. HIPSend will generate an internal IR command which HIP will pick up just as if you had pointed a remote at the MCE receiver and pressed a button.

2) in the new 'Edit system wide key value' box that pops up, click 'primary command', and in the next box that pops up, click 'send IR'. Now you should see the list of IR commands from your STB remote. select the one for your STBs remote button '1'. then set which blaster is stuck to the front of your STB with the 'IR Output Blaster' option on the right, then click 'Select IR'. 'OK' the next box, and 'OK' the next box after that.

3) you should now have a system wide key defined that links hipsends command 1 to your STBs IR command 1. repeat the process for 2-9 and 0, then save your hip config.

4) Go back to the channel changer config in GBPVR and make sure that its pointing at HIPSend and that you have "(channel)" written into the parameters, without the quotes.

That should get you working. Its usually a good idea to have HIP set up to play a sound or click when its receiving/sending commands when you are testing this, its easier to see where the link is broken if it doesnt work.

Thanks for the reply. I think I have it working now. It wasn't exactly as you described but with this post and your reply to the other guy I seem to have managed. I wonder if we're running the same release...I have 3.0.0.9 that was released a few weeks ago, I think.

Glad i could help. I do have the same version of hip as you although ive only updated it recently. Maybe there are better methods in the new version than the ones i described, could you tell me where you went different from the first post?

Reason being, HIP has a pretty steep learning curve and Id like to contribute something to the community so i was thinking of writing a small guide on how to use HIP with GBPVR as a lot of people seem to be trying it out. So when i sit down to pull it all together id rather get it right first time than be eternally correcting myself
