I was wondering if anyone out there has UbuStream working with their MVP? If so, you you pass on the External Recording source parameters and any other VLC client settings you had to do to get it to work?

GBPVR 0.97.7
UbuStream 1.5
ExternalRecorder 1.0
Thanks,
Greg

There's a samples doc that's in the UbuStream 1.5 zip file that contains "working" examples of the Start Recording Parameters. If you can get UbuStream working in timeshift mode, it should work on your MVP. See this thread for more discussion of this subject.

Thanks for that info. It was useful. I followed the settings you mentioned in the file for ubustream stations and it works in channel mode for the research tv. One problem I did notice is that when I pressed <esc> in gbpvr to stop and go back to the guide, the vlc is still running. Is this a bug or did I do somethong wrong.

Also, of all the stations in your sample UbuStream.xml, will only the vlc stations work in channel mode?

Thanks for another great plugin.

You have to explicitly close VLC and then use the GBPVR keys. I think the UbuStream docs explain how to do this with a Hauppauge remote control. I don't use the keyboard much but I think Alt-F4 will close the window that currently has focus.

Pretty much any player will work in channel mode for live tv preview in GBPVR. In order to watch a channel using timeshift (or to record it), the player must be able to record streams. Currently, I'm only aware of two apps that can do this: VLC and Mplayer.

Hello everyone,

This is my first post on this forum. I recently purchased a Hauppauge WinTV-PVR-150 card, downloaded and installed GB-PVR, and just tried installing the UbuStream plugin. Once I get the UbuStream working, I plan to get a MediaMVP that is either already wireless, and get a complementary device to make it wireless.

The Issue:
Anyway, I followed the UbuStream installation instructions to the best of my understanding, and it appears to have worked for the most part. However, when I go through the channels, while the internet stream channels appear along with the cable channels that work properly, when I click on the UbuStream channels, I get the following message in a command line prompt style window:

"Syntax: UbuStreamCmd
<channel number>
<"player parms">
Hit <enter> to exit"

Does anyone know how I might resolve this issue?

Next Step?
Also, as far as I can gather from other threads I have read, once I fix this, I will be able to play these channels within GB-PVR on the computer, but then I would have to add a video stream recording program to eventually get it working through the MediaMVP. For that I was considering Mplayer, but I have seen much on how to set that up, so I am not sure if I would be getting in over my head. Anyway, any point of reference for experimenting with that would also be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance for any help anyone can provide.

This is telling you that you are invoking UbuStreamCmd (via External Recorder) just fine but that it doesn't like the parameters being passed to it (probably either no parameters at all or the wrong number of parameters).

I'm assuming, if you've followed the installation/configuration instructions, that you already have UbuStream working in list mode (from the main menu) and that you are now trying it in channel mode using live TV preview. This should work if you have set up the Preview parameters in the External Recorder source definition (in the GBPVR config app) correctly. Usually this would just be {channel}. Double check the install doc and the sample set up doc.

To use UbuStream on an MVP you are going to have to get it working in Timeshift mode which means the stream player must be able to record the stream. The most popular choice seems to be VLC (Video LAN Client) but Mplayer should work fine too. The examples in the UbuStream sample config doc are for VLC. The only downside to VLC that I've experienced is that it won't support (and will never support, apparently) RealPlayer streams and that, because it uses its own internal codecs, it sometimes takes a while to catch up to the latest and greatest developments in other kinds of streaming formats. An easy "quick start" is to download VLC and use the sample parameter settings (Sample_ExternalRecorder_setup_parms.rtf). Once you get that working, you can experiment with other streams and other players. Generally, VLC seems a bit easier to configure but Mplayer has more options available.

Thanks Ubu. In regards to the issue with playing the streams in channel mode, I take a deeper look at what you indicate and see if I can resolve it that way. As far as the VLC vs. Mplayer, thanks for pointing me in the right direction on that. I had read about advantages of Mplayer, but it is probably wiser that I get myself up to speed on the VLC which people have gotten working already, rather than trailblazing with Mplayer just yet. I will let you know how things turn out.
