The GB-PVR Recording Service is set to Automatic but it starts up anyway with Windows. Shouldn't the service only start if there is a scheduled recording?

Why? What does it do if nothing is recording or scheduled to be recorded?

Because its designed to work that way.

It does lots of things in the background at various times. It performs automatic EPG updates, automatic file conversions (MPEG2 -> xvid etc) at low priority in background, acts as a webserver for requests that could come in at any time, acts as an MVP server for MVP clients that could connect at any time. It provides regular monitoring of the database to see if various utilities have requested new recordings. It performs automatic database compaction, and offline clean up of live tv files.

OPaul,

Being set to Automatic means the service is started when Windows starts.
Some process has to be running and watching the clock in order to start a recording on time.

Yea, but if it were just used for starting recordings then you could just have Scheduled Tasks built into Windows do that. But evidently it does more then recording.

Another question on this service, why does it open port 7968?

For .net remoting, used for communication with gbpvr.exe
