What program uses M3U files and how do I use it

In the Enhanced Web Administration Plugin the playback files are using a .M3U extension. None of my current programs play that extension. Any ideas on what plays these and why the developers chose this extension or file type to use for playback.

They are playlist files and just point to an mp3 - see here

I appreciate the quick response. While this answers my question very nicely it begs another in return. The files it points to are not MP3's they are video archives or recorded shows that are layed down as MPG files and so the player doesn't recognize the M3U extension when it opens them on the Enhanced Web Administrator page. Yet it gives me the option to PLAY or DOWNLOAD.

I believe they are designed for use with mp3s but can point to any file
What player are you using?

I don't know what players play m3u-files ok, but on my system WMP won't play them (it gets stuck on connecting), but vlc plays them fine.
AMD Athlon 64 3000, HDD: 80, 120, 200 GB, Hauppauge 350 + 150, MVP, Asus 6000L Laptop client, Asus X50sl client,
Fritz!box 7140 modem/router, GBPVR 1.3.7.

I think WMP downloads the entire file before starting playback - VLC will start playing straight away
If its a big file you'll see "connecting.." for quite a while
