Hi

I must say that GB-PVR is an excellent app and it works beautifully well. However now I have a number of recorded stuff that are in MPG format taking up a lot of space that I would like to encode to AVI files (DivX).

I need recommendations on using something that will process my C:/recorded and all its subfolder. I am not after anything fancy, I am not after editing out commercials, or filtering or anything just a staright forward conversion.

I have spent all of today (Xmas day) going through many support forums and reading numerous guides but I am yet to come across something that is as simple as what I requested.

I have been playing with VirtualDubMod and it works great for single files. Yes I know it has a job processing option but I still need to INDIVIDUALLY select every recorded file, apply the video and audio compression settings, and click on save as and give it a file name.

This is simple way too much work. all I want is a simple little app that will compress my MPGs into AVIs in a selected folder and all its subfolders.

Any help would be greatly appreciated and merry Xmas.

Cheers

Lance

Ps. sorry if this is not the right forum but I just thought that you guys might be able to help.

it's built-in..Big Grin
just use one of the ffmpeg conversion profiles in config on 'processing' tab...
if they're mpg recordings, use the 'auto-convert .mpg files to' and choose a profile that outputs xvid or divx .avi...Smile it will do them whenever you schedule them for..[selectable time period on same page in config, so won't interfere with normal watching]
[i'd start with the xvid profile]

you may have to tweak the ffmpeg profile a bit, but it's just what you want..

Yes they are MPG recordings, so do I just select auto convert MPG recording to DivX?

I have downloaded FFMPEG however I havent really set it up or anything yet. Do you know where do I need to change the profile for conversion?

Also I want it to process during or after a show however there is a time setting in config - processing that says ASAP - time, how do I get it to process irrespective of time? I dont want to go back to settings to change the processing time every time I record something? ASAP is good however I want to get rid of the end time.

Lastly, a bit off topic I know however I havent played with comskip. Is it any good? would it remove ads from free to air TV and Sky?

Thanks for your help

1. yes, just use the auto-convert to xvid..if you use the divx i'd change the -b1000k to something a bit higher..[like say -b2200k] in config.xml under customffmpegconversions
2.oh and ffmpeg comes with gbpvr so nothing to do for that..Smile

3.basically there are there 3 ways to use those profiles, auto-convert at specified times, the ASAP [ignore end time if using ths] which happens immediately after recording, and individually from video library at any time..

the [process during show] on that page is just for comskip...
comskip works decently, it doesn't actually remove the commmercials, just sets a file with skip points that gbpvr uses to skip them as you watch...works on almost any content..
other utilities can remove commercials, usually while you transcode..[mencoder]

Mate thanks a lot for your help, I have set up GBPVR to do auto conversion so will see how it goes tomorrow. I have set it up to Xvid so I wouldnt need to modify the XML files.

I dont usually use GB PVR to view the content just record them and use VLC for viewing so no need for comskip at this point.

You really helped me a lot here as I was going around in circles before trying to automate the process and its much simpler than I thought which is how it should be.

Have a great Xmas and New Year Smile

Happy Christmas all!

lancedefrance asked how he can "process my C:/recorded and all its subfolder"

I thought that enabling autoconversion would only work for new recordings, not for existing recordings.

For existing recordings, I use stattik's transcode script that uses mencoder to create good quality xvid/H264 files. It helps if you have some experience of editing batch files.
