DirectRemoteAccess not working

I'm a new GBPVR user. I just bought a new Hauppauge PVR-150 card (standard version with the latest 43 key remote and ir receiver that plugs into the back of the PVR-150).

I can use the remote just fine with ir.exe running. But I want to use the remote directly since I'm running a dual screen configuration and GBPVR won't have focus most of the time.

I followed instructions and tried every combination that I can think of: stopped ir.exe, restarted gbpvr, set the DirectRemoteAccess setting, tried various remote types. But nothing works.

I'm an experienced embedded software developer: so I'm ready to do some debugging. I just need some tools and pointers.

GBPVR version: 0.98.8b
System: 2.8Gig P4, 500MB DDR, PVR-150, GEFORCE2 TV out, DVD Writer, etc.

That direct access feature is only for PVR250 and PVR350 cards.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to best get the PVR-150 remote to send commands to gbpvr directly? I'm investigating HIP but it's not clear what plugin or config to use yet...
