I guess I jinxed myself the other day when I said how stable and reliable GBPVR is, because today I'm living under a dark cloud.

For the life of me I can't see how what I did caused such an implosion. I just made some changes to config.xml in the MVPTranscode area in hopes of getting a problematic AVI file to play. Now the whole installation is a bloody mess.

After the first reboot I noticed the tray icon was just the little TV instead of the white "G" and it left a recording status window open with no less than eight seemily unconfigured tuners/capture sources. Config barfs up a .NET unhandled exception with something about a "token" and "NAME".

Blah, blah, well I can't fix the damn thing and it's an old version so I guess it's time to start over with a current one.

I'm bad, 'cause when I get something like this working so well I'm extremely resistant to change it. It's been about a year since I started using 96.08.

Wow, I can't believe how much consternation it's causing being down. Crap, another addiction realized. Just what I needed. If I don't get it fixed soon my better half is going to tear off my head, not to mention the F1 season is just starting with the first race tomorrow.

Well, thanks for letting me get that off my chest. I'm off to try and get 99.12 up and running. If I have to reinstall XP I'm gonna come unglued. Then all the work of rebuilding all the recurring recordings etc... Sheesh, what a whiner huh? Well-adjusted?, nah hardly.

Cheers

It sounds like you broke the config.xml file with your edit. You could try deleting your config.xml, then copy and renaming config-master.dont-edit-me.xml to config.xml.

Hmm, I thought of that, well read about it and checked it out. It was missing the UTF or whatever in the top line and I fixed it, but I guess it was probably a sign of deeper troubles with it.

Exact placement from the margins and stuff like that doesn't matter does it? What other little things could I have done to it?

I did look it over and it looked OK but granted I really don't know what I'm looking at beyond the beginning and ending markers.

I can't look at it now as that box is juiceless ATM, but I thought the "don't edit me" version was missing a bunch of stuff and I didn't feel confident editing it.

I'm feeling a little bit disappointed that a stronger warning was never mentioned about editing the config xml if this degree of phuckedupedness can happen from what I thought were innocuous little edits. And I was always careful to cut and replace to the exact same points. I will be staying the Hell out of it in the future for sure.

Oh well, I suppose, as I'm on the 99.12 track now.

Thanks Sub for taking the time to post. Cheers

Some editors add crap in the file if you're not careful (rtf instead of plain text). Use notepad to edit it, not wordpad.

The very first line of that file tells you to take a backup before attempting to edit the file. They are wise words...

I did use notepad. Still don't know what really happened.

I would have backed it up, probably did, but since I didn't know that was the problem at first I just marched on trying to fix stuff but only making things worse.

Turns out it was an extra <. I was having trouble with the install of 99.12 and happened to accidentally double-click the config.xml file trying to open it for editing. Bingo bango it tried to open it in a browser window with a big error pointing out the line and character number including a handy little visual window. It was plain as day then.

Anyhow, I've now got 99.12 up and running with three tuners and an MVP. It seems to be working well so far. I lost all my future and past recordings, but the work to put it all back paled in comparison to the sinking feeling I was getting contemplating reinstalling windows.

I'm sure I will see improvements in this version but right now I'm just basking in the rays of relief. Whew.

Cheers

p.s. I still think stronger warnings should be metered out when discussing config.xml. I had no idea of the catastrophic consequences.
