Hi Can someone please help, I`m trying to get a pc with a wireless card to connect to a router and access the internet but I`m having problems, I can connect to the router and I have a good strenth and good quality signal but I can`t access the internet, but if I connect to the router using a ethernet cable I can access the internet.

Anyone with any suggestions?

Thanks

Check your router to see what the security is set for and make sure it's the same (WEP, WPA etc.). Your card in the computer will need to match that setting as well as the encryption code.
If this is all new to you, I suggest you follow the info on the router mfg's website.

It all matches, and connects fine, but When I open internet exployer, its as if it trys to connect to the internet through the attached router and not via the wireless card, (the attached router is only used for MVP`s via homplugs).
So I think I need to point the computer to access the internet via the wireless card and not by the attached router. (Dont know how to do this though)

Thanks for any advice

how many routers do you use? 1 or 2? if i understood you right you have one router connected by wire just for local lan access (MVP...) and an additional router using WLAN for internet access? do they both have DHCP enabled? you need to make sure that you have your default route set to the WLAN connection. dunno if it makes a difference which connection you make first, but open a DOS-Box and type
route print 0.0.0.0
do you get one resulting line or more? post the result & the IP's of your routers AND the IP's your machine has. best to also post the result of
ipconfig /all
delete any sensible data (e.g. names or the like) before posting Wink

I know when I reinstalled XP, I had to re-order the "Local Area Connections" - I have a gigbit connection from my main PC to my GBPVR server, and 100 Mbit to my router. If you open up Network Connections, the first on the list is the one that the browser uses.

To re-order them: Open up Network Connections, drop down advanced, select Advanced Settings, and move the wireless connection to the top.

Not sure how to do this in Vista, though.

I agree. My MB has a built in wireless and it's on by default but I'm using wired so I had to disable the wireless area connection so that the Local (wired) would work.
I think the reordering works the same way in Vista but I'm not 100% sure that will work anyway. I'm curious how it turns out.
Good Luck.

You can just set which connection IE or Firefox uses in their options can't you?

Cheers

I certainly haven't found it - and I've looked somewhat extensively. It took me a while to find that stupid "Advanced" menu item (read: googling)

I know on my system, if I put in the ip address of my GBVPR server (adapter 2 over gigabit) it's smart enough to use that interface, everything else goes out the default interface (first on the list in Network Connections).

Actually, more likely, since it's a bridged connection, if I use an IP addy on my private subnet, it broadcasts it out both interfaces, where if I use a non-local ip address, it uses the default interface.

For the wired network card that is attached to the MVP connections, set the IP Address and Subnet Mask manually and leave the Gateway Address blank. Windows will not attempt to use that connection for the Internet if the gateway is not set.

There is no way to specify which lan connection to use in the IE settings. You can only specify that you want to use lan instead of dial up/vpn.
