1.2.9/XP install, won't complete install

Gets near the end. then rolls back and exits due to some unnamed error. Any ideas as to how I might find out what the error is would be helpful

Brand new shuttle xpc glamor (core 2 duo, 2gb, xp latest updates, brand new functioning hauppaugh hvr-1600)

I installed .net (3.x) and the visual studio thingie.... this is a clean install.

Ok Weird

found an old 1.1.5 msi, installed that, worked fine.
*then* installed 1.2.9 over it, installed fine. Go figure!

At least I am over that hump! Moving on, wish me luck!
