I've been reading up on HDTV, STB's etc and am trying to figure out if I can use GBPVR with a Satelite or Cable receiver and record HDTV.

I have a HVR-1600 with QAM support and currently use it with both Dish-network (the analog tuner) and a roof top Antenna (for the HDTV tuner on the HVR1600).

If I use the HD tuner with a Dish-HD reciever or a TimeWarner HD receiver, will I get HD quality recording? I've read that the Dish and Timewarner may have encrypted the signal on some of the channels so they will not work...

Thanks

No you wont. These receivers will only supply a standard definition picture to the HVR1600. If you wanted to record a high definition signal coming from a receiver, you need a device like this, which has HD capable component video inputs: http://www.hauppauge.com/site/products/data_hdpvr.html

You can use your HVR1600 for receiving HD via over the air ATSC or unencrypted digital QAM channels from cable.

usa fcc said that the cable companies have to broadcast the local (abc, fox, nbc, cbs) hd channels as Clear-QAM unencrypted. the premium channels such as sci-fi, discovery, history channel will be encrypted and you wont be able to tune them with a hvr-1600.

Thanks... Is the HD-PVR supported in GBPVR? Also, I should have thanked you for all your work on GB-PVR. I've had it running for over a year and love it.

Yes, it supports the HD-PVR. I'd have to give a disclaimer though - its very early days for this device so I suspect there will be a few bugs in both the drivers and the apps that support it (incl GB-PVR).
