TV3 just announced they are transmitting 5.1 see:

http://freeviewnz.tv/index.php?section_id=8

Does any one know if that's in ac3 or aac? And can GBPVR decode it?"

Its in AC3. Yes, GB-PVR can decoder AC3, but you need to have an AC3 decoder installed (like the free AC3Filter).

You'll need to go into you capture source settings and manually delete the TV3 channel, then rescan for it. Make sure you enable the AC3 version of the channel.

Hi sub. I've installed ac3filter and set it to SPDIF passthrough.

Works fine for LiveTV. But something is reencoding it to stereo when playing back recordings. There are no AC3 options in config for playback so how do I get set it to passthrough the ac3 stream to SPDIF?

first you ahve to be sure your SPDIF output is working.

Once you check the box that makes the SPDIF passthrough go, no other options work in the AC3Filter setup. All it does is feed the stream straight to the SPDIF jack on your soundcard.

After that, it's up to whatever device you're using to decode the AC3 to turn it into proper surround sound (i.e. whatever you've plugged your SPDIF out formt he computer into).

Try using Gspot to see what decoder you're using for playback. it's entirely possible that you're skipping AC3filter and not knowing it.
