Is there an alternate firmware (or some other way) for MediaMVP Wireless to support WPA? Right now it only talks WEP which is pretty useless.

Thanks.

This is not likey. The linux kernel provided by Hauppauge doesn't support the required WPA additions to the kernel.

Thanks for the reply. I was hoping someone had hacked it provide WPA. Just coming from installing dd-wrt on broadcom wireless routers (its amazing what they can do as compares to the stock firmware). WEP is useless for me as I am not dropping my wireless network security to WEP just to get the MVP on the network. I should have saved some dollars and gotten the wired version instead.

Just wondering how hard could it be to add in WPA? It has been supported on linux after all for quite sometime thru wpa_supplicant. wpa_supplicant docs state that it is suitable for both computers and embedded systems. Any ideas on how can I go about adding this support in myself?

Thanks.

We (mvpmc project) did try to get a newer 2.6 kernel from Hauppauge for this but they don't have it. Apparently SageTV does but they wouldn't release it. Since mvpmc relies on the hardware binaries which are not Open Source and Hauppauge/IBM won't provide them simply upgrading the kernel yourself is out of the question.

So you would have many severe problems to overcome:

- backport wpa_supplicant
- backport the drivers http://acx100.sourceforge.net/ mvpmc uses the non Open Source binaries so I don't know that will work out, I doubt very well.

I agree the wireless MVP is not a good deal, for fifty dollars less you can buy the wired one and then add a good bridge and for $55 more you can buy a Popcorn Hour with 802.11n. In the end though wireless and video isn't all that great so wired is cheaper and more reliable.

Thanks for your reply. So adding support for WPA is out of the question.
