Wow, my typing sucks. should have been "Easiest" and "1.2.13" and "1.3.7" in the title. (blush)

Any advice on switching between these two. My 1.2.13 installation has lots of time in it, and I don't want to screw it up. I know I can replace the gbpvr.db3 and config.xml from a fresh 1.3 install .. I have lots of backups, including copies of the entire gbpvr directory, but what steps work well to switch between them. Do I use Windows remove programs to remove 1.2.13 first, then install 1.3.7, then copy over the two files? Or do I install on top of 1.2.13 without first uninstalling?

To go back to 1.2.13 do I again use the Windows uninstaller before reinstalling 1.2.13? To return to 1.2.13 - Do plugins need to be reinstalled from scratch, or can I just copy my complete copy of the previous 1.2.13 installation on top?

I've always backed up my GBPVR folder, then installed the new version over the top of the old (which retains all your settings). AFAIK (I've never had to do it), you can go back to your old system by removing the new GBPVR folder and copying the old one back in. However, going back to your old version would get a bit more complicated if you had used the new one for any length of time and recorded stuff.

This is what I did the first time. It seemed to install OK, but I had trouble with running 1.3.7, so I had to go back.

This is exactly what I did, but I had lots of problems. The icons for config and PVRX2 were missing. I ended up reinstalling 1.2.13 fresh, then copying over.

This is not a problem - I only need to go back and forth during testing, and I'm pretty sure you can copy the old gbpvr.db3 and config back into 1.2.13 to bring over any new recordings if needed (or export and import)

It is always a good idea to have a copy of the gbvrp folder as a backup but you can't revert to an earlier version just by deleting and renaming folders.

If you simply remove the 1.3.9 folder and replace with the 1.2.13 folder, upon starting gbpvr or config.exe, it will envoke the install process to "repair" 1.3.9.

To revert to an earlier version, you need to uninstall 1.3.9 and then install 1.2.13 again. Plugins shouldn;t need to be touched as long as they are compatiable with both versions.

It might be worth reporting what the problems were that you had with 1.3.9 so people can help you fix them. Do you have the logs that show the problem? Most people are running fine with 1.3.9 AFAIK.

As a matter of interest, what would be running that would know 1.3.9 needed repair? I would think that it would be unable to find anything related to 1.3.9 if the folder name was changed, and it would only find 1.2.13 programs. Is there something in the registry that needs to be undone by the uninstall?

I was in the middle of major changes installing a DVB-S card and getting up to speed with solving problems with the drivers, etc. so I didn't want to deal with the problems I encountered with my first attempt at 1.3.9. I'm confident I'll get it going. That's actually why I'm asking about reverting. I'm close to getting 1.2.13 tweaked, but it's not quite there yet (still too many channels causing it to perform some operations too slowly). I want to tackle 1.3.9 again, now that I know my hardware is working, but I don't want to lose the almost working 1.2.13 install.

The wife is already annoyed at the tweaking I'm doing and keeps asking when she can watch the new hardware.

Yes, I believe the .MSI installed keeps track of the files (I'm not a developer so I don;t know the details). So unless you run the un-install, it still maintains regsitry entries for 1.3.9 and if you then start up 1.2.13 gbpvr.exe, the MSI repair tool will start (and probably install 1.3.9 again).

Ah , the life of a gbpvr wife......

We should setup a self-help group on this forum for our wifes and lovedx ones so they can swap stories along the lines of

"He's always messing with that computer thing and it never works when I want it to"

- by which she means that it recorded 1000 episodes of her favorite show but 3 months ago, due to a scheduling error by the tv company, 30 secs were lost from the end of episode #346.

or (b)

you left notepad config.xml open on the desktop instead of ensuring gbpvr was running.

That would explain it. I was unaware that msi monitored apps installed with it.

It doesn't help things that I haven't gotten around to reducing the number of remotes yet. I think she was about to kill me when I opened the new DVB-S box and she saw another remote in there. I escaped only by promising that I would never, ever use it for anything.
