I haven't tried to watch everything yet but most of the shows starting at 9 got fritzed. I looked at the computer and the tray icon was green but would do nothing. I looked in the task manager and the recording service was not running.

Aaaaaarg! What happened? What can I do? It sucks that I can't count on this damn thing anymore.

It seems like I'm having problems with every single thing I do with this new version and digital recordings. I'm not sure where to even start.

TIA - Cheers

Is there a message in the Windows event viewer?

I was having a similar problem (HVR-1800 digital, WinXP, clear QAM) -- the recording service would crash, tray icon stayed green, no message in the GB-PVR logs, and an entry in the Windows event log with no real info other than stating the recording service crashed. Happened regardless of mux.

I took some steps and the problem seems to have gone away (30 hours of digital wo/crashing, fingers crossed). First, I made more room on my recordings drive (went from 7GB free to 60GB free). Ran JKDefrag. Also upgraded to SHS's latest Hauppauge package (http://www.shspvr.com/smf/index.php?topic=11717.0) (plus the update in post #2, plus the HCW_ChanDB.EXE in the same FTP directory). Edit: also rescanned and remapped my clear QAM channels after all this.

I also see that SHS has posted an even newer package, so maybe try that as well if nothing else works.

I don't know which of my steps fixed the problem, so maybe try cleaning up the hard drive first.

Thanks for the reply Tony.

I do have some stuff from the event viewer but don't know what to make of it.

These are the three that happen about the same time in the system section. Nothing after the gbpvr crash.

I was recording 3 ATSC feeds from the antenna and the better half may have tried to watch the PCH about this time. Is that what MRxSmb could be related to?

The PCH will play stuff fine when the server isn't doing anything, but it will definitely stutter horribly when recording stuff. This makes me think the hard drive isn't up to snuff. It's a 250GB IDE as a slave (this shouldn't matter, should it?). HDtune says it will average 50/60 a sec. and I've noticed a newer SATAII running in SATAI mode will still do almost 100/sec, but an older SATA drive will still only do about 60 but the seek time is a lot less and the burst rate is higher. I'm gonna try this older SATA drive just out of desperation since the newer one runs in PIO mode more often than not on that box. I've never had so much trouble with hardware, but I guess the task is just pretty intensive.

I'm also thinking about trying the DVR-MS mux too. Would this make any difference?

Just kinda throwing stuff at it at this point. I think I see a XP reinstall in the near future.

Cheers

So good so far, but I know it's only a matter of time. Can you tell my confidence has been eroded?

This was the same message I was getting. I don't know about the other messages.

3 feeds to an slow hard drive seems like it could be a problem. When I was having the issue, the recording service would crash every 4 hours, on average. So to test I would record a channel for 24 hours. You might want to do the same thing--record 1 channel for a day, if that works, try 2, then 3.

Thanks Tony for being the only one that gives a crap. I guess the author doesn't like me or something.

It doesn't seem to have crashed since so who knows. I don't really like checking on it all the time but what can you do.

I still don't understand why I'm only getting about a third of the transfer rates on a sata 1.5gb/sec drive either. I've been over every single hardware setting I can find.

Boy, do I miss the set-it-and-forget-it days. I don't do well with everything up in the air all the time.

I have been reading the thread, but didnt really have any ideas. I've been very busy with my day job recently, so havnt been responding to as many threads as I normally would. Responding to every thread in a useful way is really time consuming, and I just dont have that time available at the moment. Sorry. I dont mean to offend.

I've been following your thread with great interest, since I have a similar symptom... the problem is the lack of info...

As it happens, I've not had a crash for about 48 hours now... the only change I made was to download a couple of Windows Updates...

Too early to say if that's fixed it though, but if it has, I'll post details...
