Very nice Hoborg. I wish I had this information like 6 months ago! I download lots of files from the internet so I have varying H.264 .mkv experiences so it is easier for me to stick with software decode for h.264 (CoreAVC). For MPEG2, I never got DXVA to work on Vista or XP using ATI HD3200 integrated graphics. BUT, I have 8.11 not 9.3, so maybe that will help.

You are welcomme Smile
I created SAF exactly for this reasons - to eliminate as much problems as possible, autoconfigure most of things, and simply make all working Smile
BTW - i update my SAF package to support h.264 LiveTV, so now SAF will do all the work. If you are interested, PM, i will send you instructions.

I newer get any e-mail notice from this thread Sad

FWIW, when I was using XP with my 2.4 GHz P4, the best card for MPEG2 1080i was the ATI Radeon 9550 (AGP). The CPU utilization was well under 50 percent as I recall. But when I "upgraded" to a Radeon HD 2400 Pro, it was not nearly as good. This was with Power DVD decoder (version 6 or 8), which was the best for tapping into the acceleration hardware of the 9550, but apparently couldn't do much with the HD 2400 Pro. I also bought a Radeon X1050, which worked as well as the 9550, but was also Vista compatible. However, the built-in MPEG decoder (WMP) in Vista did not work as well as Power DVD, so I went back to using WinXP on that PC.

This may not do you much good, but it shows that the hardware acceleration has changed, and it is not straight-line progress with the later cards.

JimF:
50% of CPU utilization? No way, that mean no DXVA working.
If DXVA is on, your CPU should not be used more then 10% even for h.264 full hd...

Are you sure you enabled DXVA for "PVRX2.exe" ? Need to be done in registry, or use unlocked SAF...

hoborg,

I didn't make any registry changes, so DXVA probably wasn't enabled. I think the CPU used typically around 25 to 40 percent for MPEG2, probably at least twice that for h.264. But the point was that the later hardware did not help, for me at any rate.

Yes, that is logical if you didn't enable DXVA Smile

This ATI stuff is weird! I've never made registry changes for the cyberlink mpeg2 or H264 decoders on my 780G onboard HD3200 card and I get 3-6% CPU on both SD mpeg2 and 1080i H264 playback. That's using the gigabyte drivers that were based on 8.11 on Vista x64. I'm tempted to try Windows7 to see if it does use less resources than Vista but I'm not sure I can quite bring myself to break my largly working installation.
