GB-PVR used the "Line 21 Decoder 2" filter to decode closed captions, while N-PVR seems to use the "Line 21 Decoder" (not 2) filter instead. Was this an intentional change? There are some parts of how GB-PVR did it that I think worked better and smoother (especially with the roll-up style captions), and I'm wondering if this was the cause of the change. Is the decoder configurable somewhere, or maybe I've screwed up my filter merit settings or something?

Thank you.

It wasnt intentional. I'll try to make it configurable in a future release.

Actually, I think that even if it isn't configurable, from my limited reading of the MSDN docs, "Line 21 Decoder 2" is better in pretty much every way, so I'd suggest switching the hard-coded decoder to that so it works like GB-PVR had it. Being configurable would just be a nice bonus.

Thanks yet again.

On the subject of Captioning, what format does the HVR-1600 card used with GBPVR store the caption information decoded from Line 21 on the composite or S-video input? I'm trying to play it back on a device that is expecting an ATSC Compliant A/53 caption file in the MPEG-2 program file, and it is apparently is not meeting that specification. I know the captions are in the program stream because VLC is reading the information and displaying it on the screen. If you are recording the information and encoding it to the SCTE-20 standard, can it be also be transcoded to the A/53 format?

I'm asking you about this, because support at Hauppauge said it was up to the application as to how it is recorded.

Thank you, sub, for a GREAT product.

OK, I finally bought a HD TV. Glad I had some stuff recorded to watch!

GBPVR/NPVR only do closed caption on digital service (and analog cards that encode CC into the video streams 'user data header', ie digital server like). I cant remember what the name of the US standard is that defines the deliver of CC on digital services.

For the most part analog cards do not record the CC information. Some applications like WinTV store it as private data in the stream in the recording, so that they can display it during playback in WinTV, but other applications will not know how to handle this info.

it's not really an NPVR question The files that NPVR makes with my HVR 1600 (analog and QAM/ATSC) do record the appropriate information for closed captioning. Using my Popcorn Hour as an NPVR extender (Nextender) SD analog port (composite and s-video) output the CEA 608 (line 21) information correctly and with my TV I can use the CC1 button to display just like broadcast TV. Even ATSC HD which is downconverted to SD continue while display the closed captioning. Unfortunately I cannot program the NMT to display CEA708 captioning but I expect that there is a way to play it because again all the information is there.

As Martin said, it's the CEA 608 or EIA 608 (not sure of the difference) also called the Line 21 data.

Thanks, guys. I'll take it up more with the vendor of the server system. I figured I'd start at the beginning of the capture to see how captions are stored as it is digitized. Back to the books!!!!

hey, did aa4hg steal my avatar or did I steal his? I'm about 99.9% sure I'd never seen this avatar used here before, and I know I read this thread at the time (I explicitly remember whurlston's comment "uh so sub, he went public"). Mine's better of course Wink

edit: maybe I should just ban him Big Grin
