Would this work with GBPVR/NPVR and allow recording in widescreen resolutions?

If you want to record highdef widescreen content from a set top box, your only real option is the Hauppauge HDPVR. It uses component video rather than HDMI though.

Aver do make an HD PVR like product the MTVUHDDVR http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.asp...6815100052 but the HD PVR and NPVR are such a good match why bother? There were a lot of problems with GBPVR and SageTV and the HD PVR which probably gave it a worse reputation than it deserved, I am completely happy. The only thing that would make it perfect would be if NPVR tuned it twice so I didn't have to fix the output to one resolution (I choose 720p).

BTW, at IFA in Germany earlier this month, Hauppauge demo'd a similar product to the one linked in the original post. PCIe card with HDMI (non HDCP content only), component, svideo, composite inputs.

I've got one of them here, and have used it successfully, so there is high likelihood it'll be support in NPVR in the very near future.

I tried the AverMedia product from the first post but didn't have the cpu power to drive it sucessfully. It's just a HD capture card and so you have to do all of the real time encoding with your pc. You need at least a quad core to keep up with HD content.

I've used the Hauppauge HD PVR with a comcast motorola cable box for about 6 months and its been pretty good. I'm curious about the new Hauppage PCIe card Sub mentioned. Wonder if it has hardware encoding?

Yes, it has hardware H.264 encoding.

With any luck the leaking of the HDCP master key a few days ago with will lead to proliferation of cheap HDCP stripping devices, making the HDMI input more useful.
