Slightly abstract (but npvr related).

I don't hibernate my npvr machine as it is generally being used more hours than not. As a result I'm trying to work out how things work with 'sleeping' PCs.

With the nDroid client I'm developing, I can see a situation where the client sends a request to the user's npvr machine but that machine is hibernating. At this point, there isn't going to be an immediate response and potentially if the user doesn't have 'Wake on LAN' set then it will always fail.

It occurs to me this would be the same for EWA/NEWA, for example, so is it a case that this sort of approach requires the user to make sure their machine never hibernates if they want remote access?

Cheers,
Brian

I hibernate the PVR after 15 minutes of inactivity.
Initially I just left it as was and if there was an error, manually ran a batch file or command to wake the server.
Now I just assume the server is going to be asleep and send a WOL packet when starting any client application, be it PC, PCH or whatever.
I don' t use EWA much, but would double-click my "wake PVR" icon before using the client web browser.

Thanks - that gives me some perspective on how I might approach this.

Cheers,

Re ....manually ran a batch file or command to wake the server...

That approach is fine when using npvr as "an application on a PC", when not so friendly when the client side of npvr is in a "10 foot UI" environment.
My setup has npvr running on a server in a server cabinet, and multiple client machines around the house. Most of those clients are old XBoxes running XBMC.
Each of those installs has a menu option to wake up the server. This option is run via the XBMC remote control.
