Right now I've been using NPVR with 2 PCH NMTs and content comes from HDHomerun with OTA HDTV antennas. I'm looking at expanding my content from the 12 free channels I get with Free-to-air satellight and thinking about using Dreambox 500S to accomplish this.

Has this been done before with NPVR (I saw some old threads with GBPVR and a decoder box plugin that I don't think is supported on NPVR). Shouldn't it be as easy as attaching the Dreambox to my network and using it as another source, updating channels using schedules direct and I'm good to go?

If anyone has any recommendation before I buy this Dreambox, I would appreciate.

thanks,
Steve

Sorry, but there is no functionality that would do this today.

Ok, that's too bad. Where does everyone get the content from? There is only so much over the air and my cable service doesn't provide any QAM channels that are meaningful. The Playon/Universe Internet streaming is cool... but is there another way to incorporate free to air satellight content?

Feel like theres a party and I'm missing it

There's a lot of users receiving tv broadcast from satellites, cable-tv is also an option in most parts of the world but both of these requires some kind of decoding. I use cable, softcam and a smartcard reader to receive encrypted cable-tv.

What's the big clue about the dreambox?

For that you can use a DVB-S card.

For encrypted satellite content, you can look at multidec softcam as Reddwarf mentioned above, or STB output to an analog capture device.

"What's the big clue about the dreambox?"

Well, my setup is such that everything come into the basement and then I get to all computers / TVs via Gig-E. HDHomerun works great to get OTA TV content on the network and is fully compatible with NPVR. For satellite TV, was thinking dreambox as it has an Ethernet output (similar to HDHomerun -- which doesn't support DVB-S or DVB-S2) but if its not compatible with NPVR in the same way... forget it. Also, last thing I want to do is start wiring additional cables etc throughout the house so a DVB-S PC adapter card is not the best solution for me. Any other suggestions on how to put satellite TV on your home network in an NPVR friendly way is appreciated.

thanks,
Steve

Npvr has a multirecord feature which allows sevral pc-clients (running npvr) to share a tuner or a set of tuners on a server. That means that in best case you can watch/record sevral tv-channels simultanously with only one tuner card. More info on the wiki Smile
