What actually is the “SubTitle”! Here in the UK the SubTitle is always blank in my database. When it is used I assumed that it was supposed to be the first word or words in the description separated by “:” from the rest of the description. I am trying to find a way to detect duplicate recordings using what I thought was the Sub Title. I started off borrowing a few lines from the Recording Rename script as it uses the Sub Title in the file name but that found nothing. I then tried NScriptHelper.exe which finds the “Title” and “Description” but never a “SubTitle”.

Only some EPG sources supply a subtitle. Yours mustn't supply one. Is usually a title for that particular episode.

I use xmltvgui to download my UK EPG.
Try this postprocessing.bat file to identify and delete duplicates. I haven't testing to destruction but it appears to work.

I had a quick look at the .dat file the radiotimes provides (that are parsed into XMLTV) and it does a provision for subtitle. Looking at thee line from BBC HD, that would be the entry after the second ~

Code:
Close~~~
Doctors~215/231, series 13~The Beast Within~
Flog It!~38, series 10~Exmouth~
Hairy Bikers' Best of British~2/30, series 1~Bread~
Deadly 60~7/26, series 2~Mozambique~~James Brickell~
Deadly 60~8/26, series 2~South Africa~~Giles Badger~
MasterChef: The Professionals~6/24, series 4~~
James May's Man Lab~4/4, series 2~~
Double Agent: The Eddie Chapman Story~~
Life's Too Short~1/7, series 1~~
Him & Her~3/7, series 2~The Get Together~
Rick Stein Tastes the Blues~
Wainwright Walks~2/6, series 2~Catbells~
Coast~1/8, series 4~Whitstable to Isle of Wight~
Stephen Fry in America~2/6, series 1~The Deep South~

There's a lot of good series/episode info in there that NPVR might import too, so if XMLTVGUI does what I is quite easy with the radiotimes data that would be the way to go.

Thanks for the various comments. I am using the standard UK DVB-T 8day broadcast EPG data which is more than adaquate for normal viewing and recording. Below are a couple of examples extracted from the "Description" field. :-

>Psirens: Laughs ahoy as the cult space comedy series begins its sixth series. Red Dwarf has been stolen and, in pursuing the culprits, the crew are attacked by scantily clad Psirens.<

>Kill the Alligator and Run: Homer is convinced he only has four years to live, so the Simpsons go to Florida so that he can have a better quality of life. <

Everything in "event_details" is filled in except "Sub Title".

I did use XMLTVGUI earlier in the year to download EPG data from Radio Times when I had a DVB-S card. However I soon abandoned it when I found a way to access the none standard Freesat EPG data and import that in XMLTV format into NPVR. I have just had a look at the data downloaded from Radio Times and when there is a "Sub Title" it seems to be the same as that in the "Description" above before the ":". I see that a lot of programmes have a 4 digit number in the "Sub Title". The strange thing is the Episode number I see dont tally with the examples above as the Catbells walk is episode listed as "1.1/6" and Coast is "3.0/8". The only time the "Series Number" appears seems to be in the "Sub Title".

Now I know a bit more about "Sub Title" and before I resort to XMLTVGUI I am going to try and extract the "SubTitle" from the description field as a way of detecting duplicate recordings already in the database. If that works ok I will try and add the SubTitle detection method used into gEd's postprocessing file.

It looks like ImageGrabLite could work for that EPG style if you'd like. On a match from thetvdb.org, it would be a small change to rename "Red Dwarf_yyyymm..." to Red Dwarf.S06E01.Psirens", and also update the subtitle and clean the description.
