out of process recording and background recording service

"use out of process recording" and "use background recording service":
what are these options for in the recordings menu? and how do I determine if I have them set correctly on my system?

"use background recording service" is enabled by default. It basically means it's using an nrecord.exe that runs in the background. This is the way it should be running.

"use out of process recording service" is also enabled by default. Its a workaround to bug that some users had, were the recording service would freeze when stopping recordings.

I have recently done a clean install on a wiped hard drive and use background recording service was un-ticked by default - I have now ticked it my self

It's possible that what sub meant was that use background recording is used by default *regardless* of the tickbox setting, ie, it's that's the only way NPVR works now?

I think there is another setting that the tick doesn't control

Yeah - it used to be something the user could control, but it led to some support issue so I've forced it on. I'd meant to remove that setting in the ui.
