renamed thread to what is has become now.... NextPVR on xbmc wiki.

Waiting to hear back what is expectation of xbmc wiki and pvr back-ends before too much more work is done, that may be un-done. Soon screenshots!

Understand a load of this is beta, but I do pity the newbie coming across this stuff and not knowing where to begin!

cheers

totally given up with the xbmc threads/forum and wiki for tonight. Either I am much thicker than I thought I was or you lot are just more clever than me! I can't believe I had issues with our forum, things that were laid out etc... The xbmc one is IMHO such a mess, I do not know how people follow it! But v steady front-end software.

Thank you all

couple of screenshots attached that may help with configuring this stuff:

steeb, I like what you've done with the NextPVR page on the XBMC wiki. Got a suggestion, though: maybe the wiki entry could be "sexied up" with some features of NPVR that aren't readily available from other backends?

When I was a n00b (last week...), and was looking to pick a backend server, I wanted to know if it would support the hardware (a Hauppauge Colossus and an ATSC tuner) that I'm using -- it does; whether it could handle the services I have (cable and OTA) together -- yes, indeed, which Windows Media Center DOES NOT for Canada; if/how I could get Canadian guide data for my providers -- it turns out the answer is "Schedules Direct", which is supported natively by NPVR; if the backend would do adjacent recordings on the same ATSC channel "correctly", by duplicating part of the second show in the first show's post-roll, and part of the first show in the second show's pre-roll -- damn right it does, which Windows Media Center DOES NOT; and whether I could archive recordings on my home server while preserving the Recordings database -- I think I can, via the GuidePlus plugin for NPVR.

So for me, as a long-time XBMC user looking for a backend, a wiki page that not only gave the dry specs on hardware and codec support, but also highlighted some of these great features, would make it easy to choose NPVR as the backend.

Not to denigrate the obviously good work the folks at MythTV and MediaPortal have done, but for me MythTV was a non-starter because Linux doesn't support the Colossus, and MediaPortal was a non-finisher because it ended up requiring too many extra bits and pieces (to get guide info, for example) and being somewhat Euro-centric in its documentation (e.g. it sounds pretty easy to get guide info from DVB-T, but that does not help me in Canada). NextPVR met all the requirements, and I was able to pretty much breeze through the setup and configuration without much difficulty. I think all this should be pointed out in the XBMC wiki!

Dear Karyudo. Thank you very much for your input here. Having seen your excellent work over here on the NextPVR wiki I would humbly suggest that you get yourself a wiki edit account over on the xbmc wiki? Wink

That way perhaps we could both help each other to improve those pages?

I have had some resistance from the xbmc wiki editor's as to how I laid out some stuff, I have not heard anything back. Perhaps between the 2 of us we could help and even dare I say advise!

cheers

OK, I'm signed up over at XBMC.org. Haven't made any edits yet, though. I'll be out of the country for the next week, starting Sunday. But when I get back, I'll get right to it.
