My WinXP based HTPC uses a Hauppauge HVR-2250. An S-video input is connected to a Dish Network satellite receiver (North America).

Using WinTV7, I verified that this hardware is capable of feeding the VBI CC stream and displaying it as subtitles. I also display VBI CC subtitles from the same satellite source using another computer running MythTV and an HVR-1800.

I've attempted to display these subtitles by right clicking in NPVR and selecting the CC stream, but can't display any subtitles. I also notice that recordings made with this hardware are missing the CC stream.

Is there any way to preserve VBI CC from analog sources, and if so how would I go about it?

Thanks!

In NextPVR with analog you'll only get closed captions with hardware encoder devices that encode the close captions into the video stream headers (in effect giving you the same type of closed captions as you'd get from a digital broadcast). I don't think the HVR-2250 does this. I'm pretty sure the Hauppauge 1800/1600/150/500/250/350 devices do this.

WinTV7 works differently, since it needs to give closed captions will all Hauppauge devices to meet legal requirements. It uses a proprietary closed caption stream which works for playback in WinTV, but won't help you if you play the recording in any other player.

Ouch, not the news I'd hoped for.

How would you enable this in NPVR on an HVR-1800? The feature isn't worth it to me to replace my 2250, but I might be able to swap cards.

I'm fairly sure it just happens by default with the HVR-1800. No special settings needed.

Actually, some additional Googling indicates that the HVR-1800 and 2250 use the same "new" CC method and can't embed the CC as a separate stream like the 1600 and previous hardware encoders:

Quote:I believe we have a filter that extracts them from the VBI pin (just like
MCE would do), and tacks that data onto the TS stream in a custom PID, and
it's just recorded with the rest of the stream. On playback that custom
PID, if present, is rendered by WinTV7 (it's also used for Parental
controls, etc).

I also believe that starting with driver 1.38.27160 it also embeds the CC
data (similar to 350 and 1600) on the HVR-1800/1850 devices as well.
It's been quite some time (about 2 years) since I added that, and have not
revisited it since then.

Some additional detail in that thread. This might be a lost cause but I'll poke around a little more.

I had thought the 1800 was one of the devices that inserted CC data in the stream, but maybe it wasn't. I know the 1600 definitely did, as well as some of the older devices.

FWIW I confirmed that digital recordings made on the 2250 using NPVR preserve all CC data, but as observed they are separate text streams within the MPEG TS. I don't have any analog recordings saved on the system since switching to NPVR at present to check.

I'm pretty sure you wont get any CC with analog from a 2250.
