Yeah, with Windows 8 the Microsoft video decoder is off limits to third-party applications, at least for MPEG2 DTV. It's never been possible to use Microsoft decoders for AC3 audio, which I believe is due to Dolby licensing restrictions. Were you at least able to hear audio with LAV selected for AC3 audio decoder? Some recent discussion at the tail end of the SAF6 thread sounds like you need to get the DirectX runtimes from the second link I posted above. When you installed SAF6, did you send a private message to hoborg requesting a key? The "unlocked" version gives you a better MPEG2 decoder. After changing decoder settings, it's a good idea to restart "NPVR Service" before trying to watch live TV. I hear that Windows 8 has no "Start" button but I'm sure there's some way to bring up a list of programs. You could just reboot, but that's rather drastic.
As stustunz suggested earlier, you should attempt a recording. Even if you can't play it back successfully, a recording larger than 0 bytes would confirm that decoders are the problem. Open TV Guide (it doesn't matter if you haven't set up your EPG yet) and press "Enter" on the top channel (KABC looks about as strong as any). You can then go to the Main Menu, open Recordings and Cancel it; but before deleting, navigate to the folder you have chosen for recordings and check the file size. Is it larger than 0 bytes? If so, can you you play it back using other software?
