Kodi with x-newa supports comskip and web client looks just lke NextPVR. The PVR addon has some meta data but no comskip, if you want really eye candy try Kodo Video or TV libraries plus they support comskip .

Not very secure opening up ports directly to the internet...

I tried to setup OpenVPN thru my ASUS router for Kodi access outside of my local network. I was able to get IP address, however was unable to see my windows/samba shares. After several hours of playing around I abandoned non-local access. Smile Perhaps I try again when I have some more time...

Quote:- with this direct connection all should work, but ... when remote I don't to stream directly (to Kodi), rather transcode. Does this happen (automatically?)? I can't stream at full resolution / rate. And of course want to stream at different rates on cellular (3G) vs. WiFi.
if Kodi is client, even with remote connection, you should be able to stream. Kodi provides all the codecs (video and audio).

Quote:- why use the database? Is that to sync (download) the media to the client? I admit, I don't want to do that (insufficient room on the client). So no need for the database connection then?
The database contains the 'pointers' to the actual media. The files do not get copied to each client, they get streamed to each client.

Each Kodi client has it's own local 'library' (pointers to the media locally or on other machines). The library contains the metadata for each video/audio file (movie, tv show, songs,...) like plot, artwork, etc..., but also information about which ones you've watched, and how much you've watched so you can resume later.

If you centralize the 'library' in a database, in an always-on device (in my case a NAS device on my network), all the clients use that database for their library. For example, I can start a movie in the TV Room, stop it, and pick it up where I left off in the bedroom.

Quote:- I also want to have an XBox 360 client ("extender"). Is there a Kodi client for Xbox 360? Minor item.
Smile Kodi was recently renamed. Its prior name was XBMC (X-Box Media Center). From Wikipedia: The software was originally produced as an independently developed (homebrew) media player application named Xbox Media Center (abbreviated as XBMC) for the first-generation Xbox game console.

Ironically, the developers stopped Xbox development and support in 2010.

Quote:- Do you happen to know, does Kodi make use of comskip info? And the output XML info from NextPVR?
I am told it does recognize comskip files (not sure exactly what extension needs to be present), however, I religiously remove commercials so the source files don't have them while I am viewing.

Hi,

I may be able to help you with the OpenVPN part of that - I do have that all set up and working, and can get around my network remotely (over OpenVPN). Did you get an IP address on your subnet, or a different subnet (from the OpenVPN subnet?)? That is usually the issue. That all said, Android at least messes this up a bit (TAP vs. TUN) ... Sad.

Let me play with this. I'm using Kodi on Android, and even on my local LAN (subnet) playback is not working. I can select the item, say to resume ... then nothing. Do I have to have Kodi installed on the "server", or only NextPVR?

Thanks!

NextPVR is the server, Kodi is on the client. Make sure firewall is open for inbound connections to NDigitalHost.exe, NextPVR.exe and NRecord.exe

Yep, that's the way I have it set up - and completely disabled the firewall to test it out. Still no joy ... Sad. Nothing in the logs either. Will keep looking.

Thanks!

Should probably start a new thread in the Kodi / XMBC part of the forum. If you can get it to fail, post both the NPVR logs and the Kodi logs.
