Sounds like roughly the distance to NYC. Or Rio.
Have a good trip.

Also, note that the scheduling happens only when it updates the EPG. So, if you make changes, they will not take effect until the next time the EPG is updated. My understanding is that after it updates the EPG, it first removes anything it has scheduled and then uses the priorities to schedule things. The next day, it removes everything again and reschedules.

It seems odd that the default values would be different. The default for the setting described in the Wiki (SchedulesDirectDays) is 8 days. And, that is how many days were in the guide. The "overnight" setting was/is 15, presumably also the default. My question should have been why SchedulesDirectOvernightDays default is 7 days greater than SchedulesDirectDays default.

Your interpretation as to the meaning of each setting seems plausible. However, given that most users would just depend on automatic overnight guide update, it seems odd that the Wiki would not document that setting, but instead document a setting that only pertains to manual update (presumably an infrequent thing to do).

I bumped the SchedulesDirectDays up to 21, but didn't touch the "overnight" not knowing how (or even if) it is used.

Before using WMC, actually before we had HD, we had a couple of ReplayTV boxes daisy chained on the cable. (Actually, I bought a powered multiway splitter to feed both Replays, the TV and a modem for Internet)

At that time the cable company was not the internet provider for most and some users of the ReplayTV had to use dial-up modems for the guide. The ReplayTV box, and also media Center if I am not mistaken, therefore had a weird algorithm to save download time whereby after your initial full download, the nightly updates would update the current day, plus a weird group of nonconsecutive future days. With the vastly expanded internet bandwidth now, that all seems so silly!

The reason for the two different values is just to help first time installers get up and running quicker.

Some people can have a lot of channels in their lineup, and it can take quite a while to download 15 days. So...the default for a manual EPG update is 7 days, to make the process quicker. A user would typically only do a manual EPG update the once, when they first setup their channels. From then on, they'll get their EPG from the overnight EPG update, where it doesn't matter if it takes a bit longer, and they'll get 15 days from then on.

The Schedules Direct EPG update is an incremental update like that (since that is the way SD design their API to work), so subsequent updates are quicker (unless you've explicitly done an 'Empty EPG'). As mentioned though, that initial update limited the number of days, to get the initial setup to happen quicker when the user was sitting their looking at the screen, waiting for it to complete.
