Just noticed that in the article you actually posted what is clearly the answer:
"The local system can access the network if the drives have guest shares and you use \\xx.xx.xx.xx\sharename format and not a drive letter."
I will now try that form of the directory information in config.xml, along with my own user credentials. Probably is the answer. I'll report back in a few minutes.
