Hi,

Can anyone tell me if the TBS6909 satellite card works with NextPVR on Linux?

I had hoped to use NextPVR with the TBS6909 on TrueNAS Scale but from what I have read on here, and on the TureNAS forum, that looks unlikely at the moment. So I am thinking of using Ubuntu Server.

It seems from the TBS forum that people tend to use it with TVheadend but I am used to NextPVR so would prefer to use it.

Thanks

Too many variables to answer. Linux is not like Windows, there is not just setup.exe and you are really on your own. You also don't install Linux you install a specific distro and that plays into whether or no it works.

The big question for me is why ditch Windows, if it works.

Hi Martin,

My post said Ubuntu Server as the Linux version.

Why ditich windows? Because MS wants a license fee and it is not stable. I get a lot of issues with it failing.

I had WHS 2011 and they just abandoned it. TrueNAS has been as solid as a rock and is free.

Not many variables in the post. I just wondered if anyone had used the TBS6909 with NextPVR on Ubuntu Server?

Right Ubuntu server. It can run on arm32, aarch64, amd64 etc, including RPi device Many users run Ionics for dvb because the Jammy mediatree dosn't supporting their devices and Kinetic is coming out.

Linux dvb drivers are notoriously bad. LibreElec provides what I feel is a very good x64 base dvb yet they steer users to SAT>IP boxes for stability. The reason is vendors really only support Windows, some like Hauppauge do provide great support and an Ubuntu PPA, but check out their Ubuntu issues list https://github.com/b-rad-NDi/Ubuntu-medi...der/issues and it is not trouble free. If you can't find vendor support, or support using Internet searches you are really on your own. I do have good luck with my Debian system with a Hauppauge tuner but it is not plug and play and users experiences vary widely.

Windows runs on countless production servers, failure are often due to the fact that users install a lot of thing making it less stable. My Vista server with a v4 instance runs months on end. It is just sleeping and waking to do EPG updates but it is really stable. Cost is an issue, I like licensed refurbs for NextPVR myself, but with it you do (possibly get) vendor supported plug and play install.

I would also not throw out TVHeadend as an option. There are still quirks in NextPVR that need to be addressed especially on Linux DVB-S

I've not ruled anything out including TVHeadend. I posted here to see if anyone had run this card on Ubuntu with NextPVR. I'm open to any other operating system that works.

The stability problems I have on Windows are due to the TBS drivers which is why I wondered if Linux was an option. The machine is standard Intel. I would have said otherwise.

I have old Windows licenses I can use but I'm concerned about updates. At the moment my main machine still runs 8.1 and loads of software now demands Win 10.

As it will be on my network and hopefully run Jellyfin I need it to connect to the Internet to download metadata, so security updates are a concern.

I didn't understand what "Many users run Ionics for dvb because the Jammy mediatree dosn't supporting their devices and Kinetic is coming out" but will search the internet later.

One reason I thought Linux might be more stable is because companies (usually in Germany) sell satellite PVR's based on Linux.

I'm open to using a different satellite card/solution but I have the TBS card and have never used it. I also have a number of Intel PC's I can use.

I used the Ubuntu names because I couldn't remember their specific version numbers.

It is the German Linux users of LibreElec that are so sold on SAT>IP and yes these can be quite stable devices. Before committing to Ubuntu server I suggest installing LibreElec 10 or 11 x64 on one of your spare machines with your card to see how it works. The current NextPVR server is a package that you can install directly from the LE repo and you can even use pvr.nextpvr on Kodi to view it once it is set up. You would then see how NextPVR manages the many tuners.

You can even do a USB boot from your existing PC without moving the card. Just be careful not to install it!

Once you do that test for comparison you can install the LibreElec TVHeadend server and pvr.hts in Kodi on the same box easily enough.

LE is more plug and play then generic Linux and you might get support on their forum too
