Would this allow me to restore the data which tells GBPVR which episodes have been recorded for a show? or (even better) would the MPEGIMPORT program do this automatically. I am not really concerned with the descriptions of the episodes, I just want to make sure GBPVR won't record an episode I already have.

Sorry can't help you there - where I live the EPGs don't supply that sort of info.

I "think" the only thing that you will get from Mpegimport is the what it knows from the file name. Showname, date, time. All the files that I have imported have long since been watched and deleted so I don't know for sure.

I just looked at the list that mpegimport created the last time I imported some recordings. Some had descriptions and EPG info and some didn't. At any rate you run mpegimport to create the list (in xml). Take a look at the list and decide if you want to hit the import button or not.
