I found GBPVR by searching for a PVR front end. I tried MediaPortal, I liked MediaPortal but it just didn't run well on my lower spec'ed machine. Not to mention the recording function didn't run as a service. Recording's were missed. I also couldn't stand the DVR-MS recording format. After searching for other options I saw a post in MediaPortal about GBPVR. I started digging, found BYOPVR, and finally switched to GBPVR. I never even fired up MediaPortal again. Its not a bad PVR, it just didn't suite my needs.
I did a search on Google for PVR front-ends and compared features of the ones I found. I also spent a lot of time on BYOPVR reading reviews and trying to decide on the hardware. I tried to set up Myth, but I'm not terribly *nix literate. I went back to what I'm certified in (Windoze) and found that GBPVR offered exactly what I was looking for. The support, constant development of plugins, frequent updates and ability to tweak the UI skins have made it a joy to run.
A Google search found BYOPVR and from there I found GBPVR. GBPVR is the first and only pvr software I have tried. The forum is great and I have been able to get almost all the info I have needed by reading and if I couldn't find it a post would get the answer very quickly. Everybody involved in this project deserves a big thank you for all your time and effort.
Another 'Voice from above'. Some sort of divine intervention anyway.
I heard about it on eBay, believe it or not. I was toying with the idea of TV capture to see what I could do with it. Hauppauge seemed the most common capture cards in the UK so I was searching eBay to see what I could find - one hit was a Media MVP and the guy selling it said he'd been using it with GB-PVR (even included a URL to the web-site). I bought a PVR350 and an MVP, decided the Hauppauge software was yucky so decided to give GB-PVR a go. A couple of weeks later I built a dedicated GB-PVR server. Almost a year ago now. Thanks sub!
I first got it as a front end to play stuff via MVP. I had an original hauppauge WinTVPVR-PCI card, and I was using the MVP to play back the shows. Then I got GBPVR, then a PVR150, a 160 gig drive, and no turning back.
3x MVPs (not used anymore)
XBMC
Hauppauge 150 via SVideo
Comcast Digital Cable
Motorola HD Cable box channel changed via Firewire
Vista Home Premium with RDP hack
AMD Athalon 64 5000+
340gig sata, plus 80SATA+3x160IDE Drives in XP machine for storage.
I bought a PVR-350 and wanted some PVR software that worked.
GBPVR was the first thing I downloaded after a Google search. The search ended there!
I recycled an old Dell PIII (in a 19inch wide black case, so it matches the HiFi) and integrated it into the living room tv stuff and now the wife is telling me which upgrades to purchase.... DVB-T, HDD etc...
