Good idea on putting it on another machine, but unfortunately no, I don't have another one I can try putting it on at the moment Sad. As far as defrag/cluster issues, I doubt it, as it is a new build (4 months old) and everything else functions normally (heavy 3d gaming, all other videos, etc. etc.).

erik, good suggestions, I had tried that before posting, however.

Thanks for the ideas everyone, I am going to return this to newegg and get a new one.

I don't think it's a tuner problem. I get similar skips on MPG recordings from time to time and they apear to be hiccups in the recorded file as they are still evident in other players. I have four tuner cards and they can all produce 'skippy' recordings. It seems to be related to the muxer as DVR-MS works perfectly but unfortunately this is not really an option for me since I bought the MVP. The SS mux is the worst culprit of the lot so i've stuck with the Cyberlink mux for now.

The way the decoders handle the skip does seem to make a difference. For example, the Intervideo decoder will skip about 2-3 mins when it encounters a 'blip' where as Dscaler will only jump a couple of secs. The Cyberlink muxer coupled with Dscaler gives me an 'acceptable' result but it's far from perfect.

Not sure this will help you but at least you're not alone Smile

But GoldenTiger doesn't use a digital device, so the mux won't be the problem in his case.

when these shows were recording, were you loading the system up in any other way? i take it that this is an issue that you have always had and not one which has just occurred after working fine for X months.

also, have you altered the recording bitrate from the GBPVR defaults? were you recording at the medium setting? i am assuming based on your system specs that you have USB2.0, but does anyone with similar hardware know if there is a bitrate limit? i know there is if you are plugging into USB1.

For two of the recordings I made, the system was running a game while recording. For the rest, I was just browsing forums like hardforum.com and other computer ones, or leaving the system alone. All of the recordings (I only have had the TV tuner for one day) encountered this issue with it skipping around randomly to random points in the recording, one had it skip to the same spot (forward) at certain points every time. I have USB 2.0 and had the tuner plugged into a USB 2.0 port. The bitrates were initially set for near-max settings, then lowered to about GBPVR defaults as I had the brilliant thought that I would use up too much hard disk space for little gain in quality over lower bitrates.

Does it still sound like a hardware problem? I hope so, since I already got an RMA # for the old tuner and have a new one on the way Smile! The later recordings were made mostly at these settings: Variable bitrate, 720x480, 4500bitrate, 7200peak, 256audiobitrate, 48khz samplerate. A couple were made at 7000bitrate/10000peak, 320audiobitrate, 48khz sampling, and one recording was made at 2500/4200, 256audio, 48khz.

EDIT: Back of the box states 12mbps is the maximum bitrate, but another user reports of even using 20mbps just fine on the Hauppauge UK forums (not that anyone realistically would ever use that). USB2.0 supports speeds of up to 480mbps theoretically, so I doubt it's a bandwidth issue Sad.

hmm. what about hauppauge drivers. i don't know of the issues surrounding the usb pvr250 but maybe a driver update is in order.

you can try to use WinTV to isolate the problem to a hardware/system issue rather than GBPVR.

I used the drivers from the CD, then updated them per the instructions for the latest version on the Hauppauge site. I probably should try the WinTV application, however, and see whether the videos play properly. I doubt they will, however, as they do the same thing in Windows Media Player to me Sad. Thank you for the thoughts!

i don't mean play them in WinTV, i mean use WinTV to record a new show, then watch it and see if it skips (or has timeline errors as per other checks).
