I don't have an MVP (use 5.8ghz wireless link to other TV's instead) but my understanding is that MVPs display everything in time-shift mode. The problem here is that the most common players (Windows Media. RealPlayer) cannot record streams so could not be used in time-shift mode. Both VLC and mplayer can record streams (with a little persuasion) so theoretically could work but I gather that there may be some problems with previewing recordings made using the ExternalRecorder plugin with VLC. There's some discusion of this earlier in this thread. Frankly, I haven't tried it yet. There are probably other folk who have a better handle on this issue. I'd certainly like to know more because MVP users are clearly a big part of the GBPVR community.

[QUOTE=ubu]Are you running UbuStreamCmd from the command line or the player itself? If you can run something like - UbuStreamCmd 200 "{fullscreen}" - and it works then it should work OK from within GBPVR. If not, you'll see the full error message (which you can post here so I can see it).

Yes, that is what I have been doing and it works fine. I only have a problem getting it to work from the GBPVR screen. The channels in the sample xml file work well. In the external recorder configuration, I have {Channel} entered for both recording and preview parameters - is this correct?

OK, I got it working now. UbuStreamCmd requires two parameters passed to it, or else it will return an error. I had to put {channel} " /fullscreen" in the preview parameters - although Realplayer doesn't like it.
Thanks

I think what you should have said is: "ubu - you idiot - you spelled {channel} wrong in the readme file!" I do apologize. I did, indeed, use upper-case C in one place. I will fix the readme.txt file so I don't confuse anyone else.

Actually, this is not the right way to invoke UbuStreamCmd (which is why you are having a problem with RealPlayer). In the readme file it says:

Both parameters fields should start with the string "{channel}" and be followed by any parameters you want enclosed in double quotes. Include the string "{fullscreen}" if you want to watch your web channels in full screen mode (UbuStreamCmd will replace it with the parameter appropriate to the player being used for each channel). Usually, setting Preview Parameters to {channel} "{fullscreen}" will work fine.

To clarify: if you use the string "{fullscreen}" (incuding the double quotes) in your Preview Parameters, UbuStreamCmd will look up the Full Screen Parm that you specified for the media player (when you defined it with UbuStreamConfig) and replace the string {fullscreen} with them. (These will be /fullscreen for Windows Media; ?screensize=full (no leading space) for RealMedia; -f for VLC). In the sample UbuStreamCmd.xml I provided, these entries are already set up correctly. If you copy it into the gbpvr directory and run UbuStreamConfig, you will see them. I used the sample xml file for testing, so it's likely to work correctly.Smile

The reason for the double quotes around {fullscreen} is that you can enter any parameters you want to pass to the media player within the quotes (eg: "{fullscreen} -foobar --nofoo"). UbuStreamCmd reads everything between the quotes as a single argument, replaces {fullscreen} and then passes the parameters to the player. Usually, no additional parms are needed but, for more sophisticated players such as VLC and mplayer, this can be quite handy, especially for the Recording Parameters.

I've started a new thread UbuStreamCmd - tips, caveats and disclaimers for handy hints and more static kinda stuff that people might want to reference quickly without ploughing through the stream of consciousness back and forth of a regular thread. I'd like to put something on the wiki but haven't the foggiest idea how to do it. Or where I should put it (not technically a plugin but more like a plugin than a utility I would think).

Maybe we could still use this current thread for ongoing questions, suggestions, abusive remarks, and so on.

looks like the link for your tip page needs adjusting...left out the "http://forums.gbpvr.com/" part just has the thread number part...
[or is this firefox doing it?]
i also found something strange, seems mine won't work from command line cuz it cuts off the url as if it can't handle long filenames and needs a quote string..
i don't remember it doing that the other day...Sad

anyways, was having a hard time getting a few of these sites up and didn't like the way it cluttered up my tv guide so i thought up an alternative interface...
i just make custom plugin buttons to launch each channel and don't need the external recorder plugin...no listings anyways..and hard to select a channel when there's no listing from the guide...
you can make a sub-folder in main menu say "WebTV" then put them all under there...nice n neat and inobtrusive...
same basic command line...easy..
you can still call ubustreamcmd.exe to make it easy to manage, or run the player directly with url and params too..
[instead of ubustreamcmd.exe as executable, just have the player there and pass params below..]
the external recorder method would be perfect if i could get the plugin to wait for the stream to start, maybe in next release...that way could actually use gbpvr as the player and mvp too but will only work on streams vlc can read..

i wonder if anything can play Flash files?
