"At current minimum wage" X "# of hours spent" = WAY OVER $2K(US)

PS I think my time is worth a tad more than minimum wage
If you want to know why nPVR is the bomb, ask my wife!

Over a period of 2 1/2 years
tuners approx £250
case £65
psu £40
graphics + silent hsf £70
hdd's £60
mobo + cpu, hsf £75
dvd burner £30
OS free
wireless network card £20
1GB ram £70
= £680 if I did my maths correctly which is approx $1000 then you have to add all the delivery charges which must be approx = £50.
If I spent that money now I would be able to have 2 x the memory, 2 x hdd space, 3-4 x power in the cpu and 3 x gfx power

Not including parts I've migrated I would say less than £200. 2 tuners (nova-t and ATI 550), silent Antec case plus HS and fans. Oh and now a MVP, (thanks herbs Big Grin)

And many nights writing plugins....

I had to add things up...
US$130 - Case/MB/PS
US$150 - PVR-350
US$197 - Kingston RAM (the killer Smile)
US$60 - LCD
US$95 - CPU
US$100 - 160GB HDD
The flexibility of the skins, the plugins, the shows I want to keep on DVD and the adoration of my boyfriend - priceless Smile

I had the OS & other HDD laying around - just over US$700. About the same cost as a retail hardware PVR (which will remain nameless) after you pay for the box & 3-year EPG plan. (Gee, no more "product lifetime" plans?)

Not that much getting it to work (used stuff on Craigslist, newegg specials, etc.). Quite a bit more to meet WAF criteria (nice media case, quiet fans, near-silent power supply, passively cooled graphics card, etc.). Smile

Now she wants me to "silence" my dev machine as well. She can't understand why it is so much noisier than the Celeron 700ghz box (no CPU fan, onboard graphics and a case apparently made of 1" sheet steel) she uses for telecommuting.

2 pvr 150's: $120
1 MAUI III: $28
Remote & IR Reciever (ebay): $5.50
160 GB HDD: $60
MVP: $32.50
Spare PC's & parts: $0
_______________

$246 (this is over the course of 8 months)

I figure it's still cheaper than buying 3 TIVO's plus subscription fees!

(of course my wife still doesn't "get it" - she just says that she'll catch a missed episode in re-runs - doh!)

Too much..., really too much... and the bad side: nearly 50% of the cost was for nothing, because i had to change my planning on built my GB-PVR...

And just ago i purchased a AMD Athlon 64 X2 4.200+ for replacing my AMD Athlon 64 3.500+ (both are 2,2 GHz each core), only because the NVIDIA PureVideo Decoder eat's up half one CPU while watching TV... -.-

I could kick my ass... in some weeks intel brings out the conroe and AMD will lower their prices for their cpu's. Even now the AMD 64 3.800+ was degraded from 280 Euro to lesser then 180 Euro... -.-

My X2 4.200+ was bought for ~300 Euro... and i know, in a few weeks it's available for lesser then 200 Euro *cry*

Oh jesus, where do I begin? I've upgraded so many times since I started. I guess I will simply add up everything I've ever purchased specifically for the PVR. (Amounts are USD.)

WinTV PVR USB2 - $150
512 DDR333 RAM - ~$60
Radeon 7000 LP - $40
GeForce 6200 LP - $53
160 GB HD - ~ $140
250 GB HD - ~$100
RAID 0/1 Card - $100
PVR-500 - ~$100
DViCO Fusion 5 Lite - $100
CM Stacker 810 - $170
CM Stacker 4-3 Expansion Bays - ~$40
Misc. Coaxial Cables, Splitters, and Quick Disconnect ends - ~$50
M-Audio Revolution 5.1 Sound Card - $80
Media MVP - ~$50
ND-3540a DVD Burner - ~$50
Logitech Wireless KB and Mouse - ~80

Wow, so all together that comes to $1363 USD. Man... I guess I never really put much thought into it. I suppose it's easy to do overlook the cost when you start off small and upgrade over time. If memory serves me correctly, my PVR is in its fourth iteration.

I guess I should be happy that the wife hasn't asked me this same question. Big Grin

EDIT: I forgot the $40 PSU and $15 floppy drive. That makes the total $1418. At this rate I may exceed the amount I voted for!

Well I know i have spent over 2000 on my setup. Including a 37 LCD. and 2 -
5 bay hot swap Harddrives with 2.5 TB Each for Videos. One is for Back-up if one dies. But it sure beats getting up to watch a different movie just get the remote and start watching. Big Grin
