I await results with interest (three floors between PC and TV). I'm currently using a PDA with a wireless PDA card to send a WOL packet if I put the main machine into standby in the current hot weather.

Hi Martin,

Why don't you download and try it yourself.
There's a zip with the program in this thread.

It must be run on a computer where no (other) MVP service is running since then the port will be occupied and the program won't work.

I'm currently working on a service version but I guess it'll take a day or two before it can be released.

/Fred

ps. if you can't get the zip to work try download using firefox or unzipping with 7zip.

@Fred250:
What is the syntax? I saw in the ZIP an executable and a batchfile with a MAC address as parameter. I assume your program sits waiting for any MVP giving a broadcast. As soon as this is received, it sends WOL to the PC (GBPVR) with the specified MAC-address?

PZ

EDIT 20060802: Stupid me; I had not seen the answer you have given earlier in this thread. Apology!

Well, change the MAC address in the bat-file and dubbleclick.
The program will tell you whats happening - but essentially it's wating for a broadcast. When it gets it, it sends a WOL-packet to the MAC you provided in the .bat.

The .bat is not necessary but I provided it as an example.

It's a command line tool which take a MAC address as parameter and
listens on UDP 16881 and sends a WOL-packet whenever it receives a broadcast.

Execpt that it's not a service I think i'ts pretty much what your're looking for.
I'm thinking of making it a service but I havn't had the time yet.
If interested I'll give you the source and you can go from there.
It's pretty simpe, about 100 rows of code.

Until someone has built a decent dongle with WOL I'll be using it. It's far better than running up and down the stairs Smile

Sweet - the fact its not a service doesn't bother me! I'll just run it on my SBS server at the console. It never gets rebooted except to update (So never is not really true! - good old Microsoft Updates). Don't worry about the source as my programming is at best rusty these days but thanks for the offer! You should offer this up on the WIKI - there must be more people like us who want their lounge pc to suspend but have other pc's on all the time.

Do I need to open any port on my router for this to work on the LAN? Thanks.

I'm no network expert, but, no I don't think so.
If you have a software firewall on any of the computers involved in this you may open port UPD 16881 for incoming on the other computer in order to listen for server locator broadcasts, and port UDP 40000 incoming on the HTPC in order to make wake-on-lan-packets getting through.

MVP Wake-on-lan is now a windows service. Otherwise pretty much the same as described earlier in this thread.
Installation kit and readme in the zip.
If anyone finds it useful and actually uses the software it would be nice with some feedback on how it works, and how it may be improved.

Well, just to check if the Linksys WRT54G "might" do this in future, I asked the HyperWRT folks.

The writer of the HyperWRT Thibor 15c "himself" replied, which was nice, but that avenue doesn't look promising for WRT54G owners.

Thibor on linksysinfo.org Wrote:afaik, qwerty is not adding a wol relay. that is far beyond the aims of HyperWRT. qwerty is working on a time scheduler for wol, but not a feature whereby the router detects a broadcast signal from another machine and then sends the corresponding wol signal to the required machine.
Fred looks to have a winner with his neat little utility anyway. Now as a service it's even better!

Cheers

I am trying this one. I am puzzled where to fill-in the MAC address. I tried in the 'Start parameters' in the Services applet, but the system does not remember this setting. So I have to manually start the service after every reboot of my 'permanently-on' machine?

Found the answer. There is a config file in the installation directory.
