If it were a codec or hardware problem why would only a few channels be affected?

That's actually a good point and I simply don't know the answer. Your initial thought to look at the frequencies was perhaps not far off. I've tried to give you as much information as possible to help you work out your initial question as I understood it.

wrt Codecs, try Cyberlink or Intervideo or Nvidia.

This links are to reg patches, but will give you clues how to get and install the required codecs too.

Well, I think I've tried everything.

drivers
codecs
frequencies
more ram
software

The only thing left to try is hardware. I bought the card from Newegg and they've got a great return policy. This will give me 14 days to cool down before I try it again.

Grasping at straws here... but the indications are it is your h/w as you say, as it occurs in EACH s/w you have tried.

There are also some signal strength software tools out there too btw, but I think they are only for Digital Channels (using BDA Devices). Also this one, but those threads indicate that's more for NO channel found rather than choppy audio.

mine is getting worse and I can no longer watch anything recorded on channel 4 or 9.

it is the same for both my cards.

I will be sad if I cant record FOX (9) for the new season.
truely dont care about channel 4
