Maybe if we see devices start to implement the UPNP standard for remote interfaces. None of the current UPNP devices to this. I have not interest in providing UPNP support if only providing simple file sharing - there are plenty of other utilities you can already use for this.

Why? You cant run the the GB-PVR install on a linux box, but that isnt how you'd do it anyway.

If you mean for running as a client directly on some of these other devices, then yes I do have a linux client (as evidenced by the linux client in GBMVP.BIN dongle used in the past). These devices all have highly proprietary hardware though, so it would need to be heavily customized for each device you'd what to run it on.

Any way to set up an xbox-linux client? I would love to be able to control everything through my xbox in the living room and keep the server downstairs out of the way

No, not without quite a bit of work from me, but unfortunately (for you and other xbox owners) I sold my xbox long ago so this is unlikely to ever happen.

wMVP is $149 MSRP, street price will fall. Wired MVP is $99 MSRP, $89 or so street. Either is a great deal.

I've checked out a lot of alternatives and vaporware that sounded great but the MVP hardware is hard to beat. The regular software blows chunks like most Hauppauge S/W products, but that is a different issue.

The fact that the MVP provides a wonderful computer-less full function GB-PVR client is worth every penny.

Hauppauge cheaped out on their outsourced firmware. Most every 802.11g device sold today supports WPA, but not the wMVP. Pretty lame IMO.

I use Ethernet/WiFi bridges and that is how I originally got my wMVP working, but it is an extra expense over the $50 wMVP>MVP premium.

I want to move my wMVP around the house and lugging a WiFi bridge with it is less than optimal. So I bit the bullet and downgraded to WEP-128 <sigh>.

Since I bought a PCI wireless G card that supports WPA for 20 bucks on Newegg, the $50 differential between the wireless and wired MVP hardly seems worth it. I would hope it's just that they're not supporting it yet, and not that the hardware/firmware can't do it.

Yeah, not sure I understand this one. When will these people realize they're in the hardware business and they should focus on that instead? Let someone else do the software - just get enough in there so it can read from a server, or make the platform open. Think of all the WRT54Gs sold because people know they can hack them.

No worries about WEP; I just had to downgrade after my friends got me a Nintendo DS Lite for my B-Day.

My only reserve is the limited power of my gbpvr server (2.4 GHz Celron, 1.5 GB RAM) for converting divx or xvid on the fly. Does anyone have any recomendations for alternatives to wMVP for this purpose?

We're starting to talk apples/oranges here. I brought up the $50 wMVP>MVP premium to point out that an additional $80 Ethernet/WiFi bridge or gaming adapter was not the most cost-optimal way to get the MVP working in a WPA protected LAN.

PCI wireless cards are IMO not a good basis to judge fundamental wireless cost. They require a LOT of driver hand-holding and often don't work with all PC operating systems (Linux support is spotty). I finally sold off my HTPC wireless PCI card and replaced it with a Buffalo wireless bridge which works great (and it lets me reposition the antenna for best reception).

I believe that is the case after talking to Hauppauge CS and an ex-contractor.

Yep, there are a few threads about that. I am using 2 WRT54GS's in WDS (Bridge) Mode with HyperWRT Thibor 15c firmware. I just followed some good instructions I found for this, which are quite simple and it is a reasonably cheap setup as one of teh routers is my main router for DSL anyway.

The setup is reliable and a good option for current MVP owners. The later MVP's have a SPDIF jack IIRC though, although there is a hardware hack for this too.
