I have Vista dual booted with XP. If I get sometime in the next few days, I'll install the 350 and GB-PVR and see if I can duplicate your problem.

How exactly did you install the drivers for the 350? Did you use the CD or the latest ones from the web?? I know the XP drivers will install under Vista without problem but the middleware application throws a bunch of errors.

I used the latest ones from the web. Before I installed vista I called hauppage and asked the status of the card with vista, they said it's vista compatible, except for the tv out and the remote.

I could not duplicate your problem. Using my fairly untouched install of Vista, I...
  • Took a 5 min recording in Windows XP SP2.
  • Booted into Vista.
  • Installed the base drivers for the 350.
  • Took a 5 min recording.
  • Installed the 350 middleware application (unsupported OS errors and all).
  • Took a 5 min recording.
  • Installed the rest of the PVR software (WinTV, Radio, IR, decoder).
  • Took a 5 min recording.
  • Configured Windows Media Center.
  • Took a 5 min recording in MC.
  • Took a 5 min recording in GB-PVR.

All the setup I did in GB-PVR was to configure the capture source, zap2it, and ran an EPG update. For all of the recordings taken in GB-PVR, I used the "Quick Record" feature. All of the sizes were consistent at 143 MB (+/- 1MB) which works out to be ~858 MB for a half-hour recording (143 * 6).

The Media Center recording dvr-ms was ~245 MB for 5 min recording. I used whatever the default recording quality setting was. One of the problems I ran into was I couldn't use GB-PVR to view live TV after making the recording in MC. It's possible that the MC app still was 'using' the tuner after I had exited, but a quick system restart fixed that.

Unless you see something I did that is radically different from your setup, I couldn't get my system to do what yours is currently doing. I tried to keep the setup simple to eliminate any other potential causes.

I could play any file I recorded with GB-PVR under both Vista (WMP 11) and Windows XP SP2 (WMP 10).

You might want to download BitRate Viewer (free for non-commercial use) and see if that shows anything weird. My GB-PVR recordings showed an average bitrate of around 3295 - 3315:

I will try the bitrate viewer next. Thanks for looking at it for me. I guess the one thing I haven't done yet tho is restart media center before trying to record with gbpvr. I know its still running in the background because I can still access it with the xbox 360 even tho it is not open on the vista box.

It could be that Media Center is still has 'control' of the card if you use MC before using GB-PVR. That could cause something funky to happen... I don't know for sure, just a guess.

Yep that was it. I stopped all services related to media center and media sharing and tested again and all was fine with gbpvr. I recorded a 2 min clip that only took up 68 megs and i was able to watch it in both gbpvr and media player. Now to find which service it was.....
