I think he means connecting it via the tv-out on your graphics card -- if it has one.

Sorry for the confusion, yes that's what I meant.

Ah ok .... I've got a Foxconn 6150K8MA-8EKRS that has a tv out header. I can use that right ? Can I also switch to that for when I want to configure or do something with the pc ?

So if MCE also works with XP then why did you choose it ? Just curious.

It was the cheapest hardware encoder card I could find & I was just testing the PVR waters & wanted to make sure this was the route I wanted to go.
The PC was to sit in a spare bedroom.
I knew I could buy an MCE remote if I needed to later on.

I also planned on using a cable to control my DirecTv box so I didn't need a blaster.

I use TightVNC to remotely configure my PVR.
Though the 720x480 resolution makes it difficult to tweak settings due to having to move windows around to get to the buttons.

It just dawned on me that if I was to try and connect my pc directly to the tv that I would have to find a cable to go from my Line-Out to the tv right ?

All this input has been great and very informative.

I think I am at the point of deciding, which is to go with the Hauppauge WINTV-PVR-150 PCI Interface Tuner Card - Retail cause I never see myself going to windows media center (plus cheaper) and this card states it's for windows 2k or xp.
I am going to go with the mvp I have now for now and down the line I will try and figure out how I would connect the tv out from the foxconn mb to the tv.

::EDIT:: Well I've changed my mind again... Looking at the MCE cards I see that they have additional input (besides the coax) so I could potentially connect my DVD or game console to this and switch through the pvr card instead of having to get up off the couch and pulling one set of cables to plug in the dvd or a game console.

Crossing fingers of course

I'm sure that it's going to be a very interesting setup:eek:

honestly, it does not matter if the card is "MCE" or "Retail", the drivers will work on it the same, regardless of operating system. so dont worry about having windows MCE if you buy the MCE card. the only real difference is whether or not you get the remote and IR blaster. and what type of inputs it gives you.

just an FYI, so does the retail version, just doesnt have the audio in RCA plugs, its a 1/8" jack. but a adapter can fix that.
ALSO, connecting a game console through a PVR, probably not a great idea, there will most likely be some lag (on the order of seconds), you might get it working using live preview mode... YMMV

finally, why would you hook up a DVD player to an input???? its a computer, it can play DVDs!! in fact, DVD playback is built into GB-PVR!!

EDIT:: ok I read the whole thread now, I will give you some links... but you should try finding stuff like this on your ownSmile

You won't want to hook up your game console to the capture card. There is way too much lag to play games.
I don't think you will like the DVD hooked up either since the quality will not be as good and you won't be able to record anything while the DVD is playing.

Doesn't your TV have a bunch of inputs? Can't you use a few of those and use your remote to select which one you want?
