Ted, I have an RCA DRD435RH receiver. I don't remember seeing that option in the menus but will check tonight. By the way, my HTPC box just had a fatal crash. The XP repair function won't even boot up from CD! :-( Guess I'll have to worry about all this when I get back from my trip tomorrow.

My house consumes as much electricity as a small city with all the stuff I have plugged in. Big Grin I know, not really something to be proud of....

I put a Watt meter on my Directv receiver once to see the difference between on and off and I got 25 watts on and 23 watts off. Not enough to worry about so I leave the receiver I record from on all the time. This is an older DRD480RE box. I figure the compact fluorescent bulbs all over the place compensate for the computer, Directv and parasitic loads being on all the time.

Lots and lots of forums.gbpvr.com threads dealing with "hibernation problems."

I know why people want to save their computers and their electricity, but I have found from bitter experience that it is generally a Bad Idea to suspend operation on any time-critical application.

Besides, my HTPC is also my media server, so I don't mind letting it run 24/7. The easier to play my music remotely! Wink

Saving Power - off topic - but remember to unplug your cell phone charger when not in use. They wall brick consumes about 95% of the power (ish) than when you actually have your phone plugged in, just by converting the 240V down. (thats why's they might still be warm when not in physical use)

Working for a utility company, we get tips like this all the time.

We got chocolate bars left on our desks if we turn our monitors off overnight (stupid people, don't they know they do it themselves!)
"Shut up brain, or I'll stab you with a Q-Tip!"

heh, I will have to try to remember that stuff, I know my stereo says it draws < 1W on standby, no idea about anything else:p

what about your computer? were you supposed to turn that off as well?

I had my power go off a few weeks ago.
My D10 receiver just went back into an on state when the power came back.

I also have my Bios set to turn the PC on should there be a power failure.

I played with hibernation for a couple of days when i first started using gbpvr. It was not very long before i realized it just was not worth it for me or the computer. Most of us here can change out a computer component that wears out and the power saving when you figure in the powering up and down when coming out of hibernation is virtually non existent.

I agree %100. Just make sure your monitor goes full standby and drives sleep when needed and you will cut energy by 3/4 (just a guess), especially if you have a tube monitor. The cpu and ram only use power as demanded, so if the pc is idle it will be greatly reduced.
