Yep, he wants to run it on 1.0x, so he shouldn't go for overlay.

My thought was reduce the CPU load as much as possible with overlay, and try to solve the problem. If it still exists there, chances are it's only going to be worse with other renderers. I know he wants to move to PVRX2, but it seems the first step is to get GBPVR working then upgrade.

Thanks for all your comments

@ gEd: I already tried the quartz.dll, and I found no difference
@ Pastro, @HtV, @gEd: indeed am I trying to get GBVCR running smoothly, preferably with VMR9, so I can upgrade to the 1.0x version. (and bring my PVR350 tv-out to the grave, sniffff).
@ Pastro: I will check out the parallelprocessing.bat. I thought that the comskip was always running during recording (that is parallel, isn't it?) if you checked the option in the config.

As I understand so far, a newer (faster) videocard will probably solve the issue of the little hick-ups. The only thing I do not understand so far is WHY?
A newer videocard will perform better at 3D rendering and stuff, but it doesn't really do any MPEG2 decoding? Well, maybe some hardware acceleration, but is there such a big difference between an "old" and a new card?
By the way, it might still be a CPU problem: when the processor has a high CPU load, it more often skips frames. Especially when I bring up the OSD. I notice a little hick-up. However, the CPU does not reach 100% during this. But maybe that is because the values shown are the average CPU load during 1 second. And well, one frame is only 1/25 of a second.

If you selected comskip to run during recording, in config, it should do so.
You can also use parallelprocessing.bat that will give you more configuration options, e.g. to select channels not to be comskipped (Ned 1,2,3, BRT, BBC) or with different comskip.ini's.

Your video card is fairly old, but it had a pretty good DVD decoder on it. Your card isn't DX9 compliant so an upgrade will likely make PVRX2 run better. You might want to find a better card locally and give it a try and return it if it doesn't pan out.

Thanks again for all your help.

I'm pretty sure that I should try a new videocard. However, I feel a bit reluctant spending money on a (new) AGP card. To be sure the card is fast enough I should buy a fast one = quite a few bucks. And AGP = not upgradeable to a new system.
So for the time being I will stick to my old config and will keep an eye open for a good videocard for no money.
By the time the 1.0x version has "need-to-have" features I might even upgrade the whole system. (PS. Sub, don't work to hard on this, so hardware prices will drop a bit more)

Thanks to you all.

if you get a card with hardware acceleration it will drop the load on your cpu and plus you will get better play back cause it is less affected by cpu load as all it does is sort out the picture
so anything in the 6xxx 7xxx series nvidia cards(just check they do have mpeg decoding onboard)
and the ati card anything above 9500

hardware accel is worth it especially if you are lacking cpu horse power
make sure you have at least a gig of ram aswell

i have both agp and pci express similar cards one pentium one amd machine
in my opinion the agp has better video playback so it doesnt need to be the fastest best machine so unless your going for hd playback you probably could make great playback machine with what you have just by adding a reasonable card

how about this one (although it would be quieter to get a passive cooled one without a fan) or buy a passive cooler from zalman afterwards
