Err, isn't that in the same place as recordings? It's certainly the folder where new .dvr-ms files kept turning up when a client tried to view live TV.

Just checked the config again; I have set the recordings folder and the TV buffer folder to be the same on the server. That couldn't be the problem, could it?

In the logs I see this entry

Server logs
Code:
2007-07-16 15:53:49.433    VERBOSE    [10]    getValue() loading new key/value into cache: /settings/BDAMultiplexer
2007-07-16 15:53:49.433    VERBOSE    [10]    getValue: /settings/BDAMultiplexer : Microsoft DVR-MS

Code:
2007-07-16 15:56:19.058    VERBOSE    [13]    getValue cached value: /settings/ClientModeExtendedLogging : true
2007-07-16 15:56:19.137    VERBOSE    [13]    OPEN: G:\Skunk Fu_2_20070716_15501605.dvr-ms
2007-07-16 15:56:19.137    VERBOSE    [13]    file size is currently: 100144832
2007-07-16 15:56:19.230    VERBOSE    [14]    STATUS: DEADBEEF000000F5
2007-07-16 15:56:19.230    VERBOSE    [14]    returning length: 100144832

Client logs
Code:
2007-07-16 15:57:00.239    VERBOSE    [1]    About to play LiveTV File: G:\Skunk Fu_2_20070716_15501605.dvr-ms     Channel: BBC ONE

All I have is analog but it appeared to me that it is trying to use DVR-MS.

Oops! I thought when you mentioned the Micro$oft mux you meant on the client ; I didn't think that the server setting could possibly affect the client playback - wrong!

I've got remote playback of live TV working! A little bit stuttery at the moment, but I'm sure if I play around with settings I should be able to fix that.

Thanks to everyone for their help.

I still can't help wondering if streaming playback would give better results; has anyone got that to work before using GB-PVR as the client?

I use streaming as well. Works fine for me. Only noticeable difference from the server is the delays starting up and going into menus like tv guide and recordings.

Switched back to version 0.9912 on client and server. Streaming worked straight away without me having to tweak any settings. I say worked, because after a few seconds of viewing live TV, the picture begins to stutter, after 30 seconds or so the stuttering gets so bad that the picture freezes, the sound continues for a few more seconds then stalls. After that the client GB-PVR locks up and can only be killed with the task manager. Also, the server-side recording process must also be restarted before any more TV can be viewed by the server or client.

Hmm. I'll try playing with some settings tomorrow, but I'm not confidant. To me the client / server code doesn't seem very stable at the moment. For example, with the 1.x client and server, I could get remote playing of recorded programmes working using shared files, but if I interrupted the playback, from that moment onwards all other attempts to play anything on the client failed until I bounced the client application. On another PC, I couldn't get client playback working at all.

Is anyone reliably using streaming or file sharing client playback on a day to day basis with either the old or new version of GB-PVR?

file sharing is fine for playback but no live stuff for me
(recording has to be finished to watch on client)
but this has always been the way for me

Afaik there are several people using this setup. Maybe it's time to post the specs of your system (also router etc) , and the logs. So someone can take a look. As I said before, on my system it seems to work fine.
AMD Athlon 64 3000, HDD: 80, 120, 200 GB, Hauppauge 350 + 150, MVP, Asus 6000L Laptop client, Asus X50sl client,
Fritz!box 7140 modem/router, GBPVR 1.3.7.
