Come to think of it, I wonder why we need a recording service running at all on clients?

You dont really need it running, and can stop it if you want. The config app starts it when you hit the ok button, but you can remember to stop it after that, and maybe set the service to manual startup.

You don't - it can be killed off with no effect. It's probably only there as an accident and to save complications with the install and config software.
