does nvidia actually do motion compensation acceleration yet?
[one of the more cpu intensive ops of decoding]

probably why they need decent cpu but also why it looks slightly better, using pure upgradeable software for a lot of the decoding..there, codec would make more of a difference..[hence Purevideo]

yea, the newer ati offerings show more settings for type of antialiasing, plus look like edge enhance is obvious..[as good to me as dvd-upscalers]
i haven't had my hands on a hd36xx yet but i bet they have selectable edge enhance % in driver, i've seen the settings in there..Smile
i'm waiting to find a HD34xx on the market for some even newer features..
[can sli with some onboard video, plus the latest edge enh.,aliasing, etc]

i just wish the drivers worked when they release them...lol
[the ATI X1xxx work almost flawlessly, same with some older nvidias]

LOL.

I tried those postprocessing ffdshow options last night like shown on that forum and EVERYTHING was unwatchable due to slowness and CPU being pegged!

I knew it would do that, but I did it for grins.:p

Incidentally, the picture looked crappier. Maybe it's because it wasn't moving fast (frame rate-wise) enough anymore..don't know.

seems like it would be best implemented as a directx plguin or as a dx9 shader..
i seem to remember a sharpen shader filter somewhere..
basically they offer filtering similar to the video cards, but thru software..
very stable and no limit to user options, and compat. with any card..
guess i should scour the web for what's out there nowdays...

there are ways to make ffdshow go faster, but it's really only for mid 2 high level cpu machines...[check in output options tab,colorspaces/hw-accel]

i agree that we need user selectable options when it comes to edge and deblocking....everybody's tvset looks different and have different requirements..
[in new ati drivers it does have some user selectable stuff now, but only for newer cards]

If I were you, I would start with mplayer post processing & set it to auto & adjust the max cpu%.

That alone makes a big difference to me when it comes to my ripped DVD's.

"P4 1.8Ghz"

:p

I tried PureVideo decoder again yesterday with the 7600GT after not having been impressed with it with an ATI card. (I've read other people say similar, that the decoder looks soft but only with ATI cards.) I think I'd be mostly happy with just that and some mild use of edge enhancement in the Nvidia control panel, but PureVideo apparently does not like .ts files. They go out of sync.

Searching around, it's not just on my PC. I couldn't get ANY DirectShow viewer to stay in sync after installing it, even when switching to different video and audio codecs. I think it's the full Purevideo/Haali Splitter/.ts file combo that does it. I uninstalled it to then have everything magically stay in sync again. I may try it again today but with dvr-ms files. I've been using .ts since the common GBPVR conversion processes don't like dvr-ms.
I bet Michael Bay uses GBPVR because it's awesome:

media player classic has added in newest version, 2 new sharpen shaders...
and i must say pretty sweet...Smile
now just to see if there's a way to get to work inside GBPVR..
there's also edge sharpen and a couple others worth playing with....
and from what i can tell, it takes almost 0 cpu to implement!
[couldn't tell *any* difference in cpu load]
plus the filters are user adjustable..[on the fly!] [tho need to be a math wiz for some of it.]

have to use vmr9 with 3d textures for them to work, so should be pretty compatible with gb..Smile [may work with EVR too]

it's cool to play with the live emboss filter...hehe
embossed motion video...weird...
and it does it effortlessly...very promising..
